Marvel's Final 2024 Project Pushes She-Hulk Out of MCU's Rotten Tomatoes Bottom 3 as Early Scores Drop

Early review scores on Rotten Tomatoes for the final MCU release of 2024 have changed the bottom of the rankings for Marvel TV shows released in the Disney+ era, with She-Hulk: Lawyer leaving the unfavorable podium. Tatiana Maslany's 2022 show still holds the lowest audience score on Rotten Tomatoes at 32%, but critics scored it higher at 79% amid speculation about user review bombings.

And if...? season three has now fallen to the bottom of the MCU TV shows on Rotten Tomatoes for both critic scores and audience scores. The initial critic score for the current multiversal show is 75%, while the audience score is lower at 56%. 2024 opening only Echo (70%) and Secret Invasion (52% have lower critic scores in its current state), while the MCU's lowest-rated show Secret Invasion (44%) and She-Hulk (32%) have lower audience scores.

And if...? Season 3 Rotten Tomatoes Score Averages

Perhaps thanks to the time of year or the release method (And if...? season 3 has released one episode per day since December 22), there are only 12 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with over 100 user scores. More could come after the season finale as outlets that didn't get preview access publish their reviews, but the initial image tends to reflect the overall score trend.

MCU TV shows tend to score quite strongly, with an average critic score of 84% and an average audience score of 75%. And if...? season 3 currently sits below both and well below the critical high points of X-Men '97 (99%) and Ms. Marvel (98%). The show has followed a consistent trend with viewership scores, dropping from Season 1's 92% to Season 2's 65%, and now the lowest point of 56% yet. Critics have been less consistent, with Season 2 scoring higher than Season 1.

Selected reviews reveal the divisive nature of What If...? season 3. Shortlycritics call the series "bad", comic book movie call it "disappointing", and my criticism for TelaRant called it "frustrating", but others like Empire hail another strong ride, JoBlo labeled it a "thrilling conclusion" and Collider, FilmWeb both scored a solid 7 out of 10, with CBRepisodic reviews of scoring 8 out of 10 on average.

Audience scores are similarly split, with the lower end lamenting the focus on "less interesting" characters and failing to capitalize on the promise of And if...?concept. Higher scores again focus on the entertainment factor, with several highlighting the promise of a connection with Secret Wars.

Our take on what if...? Season 3 Review Scores

And if...? Season 3 certainly has its moments and fully delivers on its promise of doing something different from the rest of the MCU, but the bold decision to ignore the real questions any MCU fan would ask ended up hurting some fans and critics. You can't miss the opportunity to see returning characters who feel left out, like Shang-Chi and Moon Knightbut these are dramatically different versions of what we're used to, so it's not as satisfying as a real return. Again, there's a good chance the current Rotten Tomatoes scores will change after the finale, but for now, they seem appropriate.

And if… ? is an animated anthology series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that features fan-favorite characters including Peggy Carter, T'Challa, Doctor Strange, Killmonger, Thor and more. The new series, directed by Bryan Andrews with AC Bradley as head writer, features exclusive MCU action with a curious twist. The show features Uatu the Watcher, an omnipotent being who watches from afar the events of multiple universes as they unfold, unable to interfere. However, things change when an entity peers beyond the veil, putting the multiverse at risk.
