Marvel's iconic cast of characters has become more popular than ever over the past decade, but that doesn't mean every video game released under the brand would be a hit with fans. Marvel characters have been adapted with many different representations in comics, films, and games, but Rivals' gameplay and visuals lean more towards the colorful styles and humor of the comics. This style, along with its addictive gameplay loop, makes Marvel Rivals an Avenger-level threat against other hero shooters. However, some aspects still hold it back from being a true hero that could have finally broken the tired tropes that have become rampant in the F2P multiplayer genre.

Avengers assemble to redefine team shooters

Marvel Rivals includes newer and classic characters from the comics

With thirty-three playable characters at launch, Marvel Rivals boasts an incredibly varied roster of beloved heroes and villains from the brand's exuberant history. Some are more recognizable than others, but each has unique abilities that must be used to damage opponents, aid allies, or effectively navigate the battlefield. Each character falls into one of three categories: the tanky Vanguard, the damage-focused Duelist, and the supportive Tactician. While specific classes are nothing new to the hero shooter genre, the way Rivals encourages players to experiment with different characters with special team abilities, it's a refreshing addition that we hope more games adapt to.

Many of Rival MarvelThe game's best launch characters can be extremely satisfying to use, but effective team implementation rewards specific character choices with incredibly lucrative boosts to teammate attacks and mobility, and even helps resurrect certain characters. A specific example is when Venom teams up with Spider-Man or Peni Parker, a new AoE attack is unlocked. In contrast, other teams can boost attacks or infuse others with elemental damage and effects. THE Team skills are an incredibly clever mechanic that adds extra layers of strategy to Marvel's Rivals gameplay and will certainly be fundamental in your competitive ranked matches.

A good team composition can be the difference between an effective victory or a quick defeat in many multiplayer games. Many newer players will gravitate toward the damage-focused Duelist class, which currently has more than double the number of characters that others feature. In the right hands, a well-balanced team will usually always beat an unbalanced team. Still, team-building mechanics can make up for the shortcomings of an unbalanced team composition. However, some Marvel Rivals'the characters need some balance of their own.

A cast that's hard not to love

Other hero shooters dream of Marvel character recognition

Player feedback will help in the future Marvel Rivals updates the gameplay balance, but at launch, there is an unfair advantage for characters like Iron Man and Scarlet Witch. These characters can be difficult to hit, but they both have finishing attacks that take little to no time to prepare and cause instant death to characters who cannot move twenty feet away in 1.5 seconds to avoid their destruction.

Each Marvel Rivals The playable character has different skills and attacks that serve a specific purpose in the sometimes chaotic six-on-six matches. People who prefer to deal effective damage from a distance can do so effectively with pickaxes like Black Widow and Hawkeye, and those who like to get up close and personal will like what Iron Fist and the incredibly agile Spider-Man can accomplish. . The game features everything in between with its impressive roster of thirty-three characters, which will likely grow in Marvel Rivals bright future.

Marvel Rivals excels at making each fighter feel unique while tweaking their iconic abilities in how each one plays. There are some common disagreements about what class some characters fall into, such as Wolverine being a damage hero rather than a tank with regeneration and his adamantium skeleton. However, each individual is carefully placed in a role that finds creative uses for their powers.

When presenting a game with an already well-established cast, it's incredibly easy to feel attached to the playable characters, something other hero shooters can struggle to accomplish. Future updates will include fixes, as well as additional skins and characterswhat leads to Marvel Rivals microtransactions, one of the game's biggest disappointments.

How Marvel's Rivals Could Improve

Expensive skins and lack of modes and story presentation disappoint

Marvel Rivals“The approach towards its inevitable Battle Pass is a welcome one, thanks to the fact that its content won't become inaccessible when the next season begins, so players can take the time to unlock its content.” Although game credits can be earned without purchasing the battle pass and updating challenges completely consistently, earning credits without the battle pass is still very slow. Many individual skins cost around $15, which is a missed opportunity because if Marvel Rivals charging $5 or $10 per skin would have been a significant advantage over the often expensive skins in games like Surveillance 2.

Another disappointing feature Marvel Rivals is how it currently tells its overarching story, which could have been ranked among other great multiversal stories in comics. A PvE mode with story scenes might have been a lot to ask for, but Marvel Rivals' almost non-existent storyline is unlocked by completing specific challenges. It seems like a satisfying reward, but players are only given a few paragraphs to read, which have no introduction whatsoever once unlocked. The way Marvel RivalsThe story presented is incredibly underwhelming, especially for a brand known worldwide for its captivating, character-rich plots..

Crossplay worked well during the review period, but Marvel Rivals currently lacks cross-progression. Hopefully it will be implemented in a future update with more game modes. Quick Play features the typical Control and Payload Escort game types, which can also be played against AI opponents to help new players not feel so overwhelmed. Besides these, and the still-new Ranked Competitive mode, the only other mode currently available is Conquest. Conquest is a fast-paced game mode that focuses on killing, causing characters to explode into crystals that must be collected until a team gathers fifty.

Final Thoughts and Review Score

Screen Rant Gives Marvel Rivals 8/10

Quick Play matches typically last between five to ten minutes and will likely occupy most players' attention with their eight maps, each partially destructible and well designed to encourage player momentum. It is highly recommended to experiment with different playable heroes, especially with the Hero Tutorial and Practice Range where skills can be practiced so that players do not try out characters they are inexperienced with in the heat of battle, potentially disappointing their teammates.

The first week of a hero shooter is vital to the success of a live service game, and Marvel Rivals made a strong impression for many good reasons. While the game's story doesn't get the presentation the brand deserves, its diverse gameplay with beloved characters and new mechanics have set a high standard for the hero shooter genre. No matter what kind of characters players like to use in multiplayer shooter games, Marvel Rivals There's a hero or villain for everyone, and over time, it can get better.
