Marvel reinvents a Fantastic Four villain with a healthy dose of nightmare fuel

Some of the Fantastic Four older enemies should appear in a nearby Ultimate Spider-Man story, introducing a gruesome new feature as the Moloids are reinvented with terrifying new teeth. Often misunderstood in the Marvel universe, this incarnation of the classic subterranean species may actually be a major threat.

The cover for Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #14 – written by Jonathan Hickman, with art by Marco Checchetto – revealed a new look at the reinvention of classic Fantastic Four villains the Moloids, who now sport hideously sharp teeth.

Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne discover a family of Moloids in a basement in Ultimates (2024) #1

Moloids first appear in Fantastic Four (Vol. 1) #22, under the control of the Mole Man. Later stories would then establish that the race is a spin-off of the Deviants, the traditional enemies of the Eternals. Driven underground, these Deviants adapted to the dim light and started their own society. Unfortunately, their main role in Marvel Comics seems to be fodder for villains like Mole Man and the High Evolutionary to abuse and experiment on, and they’ve never really posed a serious threat.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time readers have seen Moloids in the new Ultimate Universe. Finals (2024) #1 – written by Deniz Camp, with art by Juan Frigeri – featured this world’s Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne going about their pest control work and discovering an entire family of harmless Moloids living in a basement. This scene reveals two crucial facts about the Moloids: first, they are not inherently hostile, and second, they are something this new Universe is already familiar with.

AVENGERS VS MOLOIDS

The appearance of Moloids raises a series of possibilities. Perhaps the Mole Man has his own gang of violent Moloids under his control. This could be a reason that goes beyond simple prejudice regarding the why Moloids are feared in this universe and explains why Mole Man is so effective. Alternatively, this cover is lying. Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) has been hilariously blatant with its covers showing things that don’t happen in the issue. It is perfectly possible for readers to open the latest Ultimate Spider-Man only to discover that these classics Fantastic Four The characters aren’t even that bad.

Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) #14 will be available on February 12, 2025 from Marvel Comics.
