Thor complicated family dynamics, to say the least, but one member may take the cake when his deadlier “brother” returns, bonded to a symbiote whose history with Poison is equally complicated. With a new Venom set to also take the stage soon, this comic may be setting up two plots at once with this former Thor antagonist as the new ‘King in Black’ of the Marvel Universe.
Marvel Preview for The Immortal Thor #17 – written by Al Ewing, with art by Jan Bazaldua – features the return of Donald Blake, Thor’s former alter ego, who reminds readers that he now has his own symbiote powers.
In Thor (2020) #9-14 – written by Donny Cates and illustrated by Nic Klein – Blake, separated from Thor, became a villain and ended up trapped under Asgard for all eternity. Later, in Thor #28, he bonded with the symbiote son of Bedlam, an alternate timeline version of Eddie Brock. Now, Blake is back, just in time to taunt the dying Thor.

In preview for Immortal Thor #17, Blake appears to Thor in a dream as Thor’s body is dying, taunting him about the potential future destruction of Midgard. Thor has been waging war on multiple fronts, with the imminent threat of the Utgard Gods on the horizon, summoned by Thor’s own mother, Gaia. If Donald Blake, last seen trapped beneath Asgard, is also returning, then that’s just another problem for Thor, who, as far as readers know, wasn’t even aware of Blake’s symbiote transformation before this moment.
With a mysterious new Venom set to appear in Ewing’s relaunch All new Venom…rreminding readers that Donald Blake is a symbiote host could be a clue that he’ll be back in a big way.
What is not clear is whether this also has meaning for Poison also. The current event Poison War – written by Immortal Thor writer Al Ewing, with art by Iban Coello – is taking Eddie Brock off the table, with a mysterious new Venom set to appear in Ewing’s relaunch Brand new poisondesigned by Carlos Gómez. Ewing loves setting up plots for one of his series in another book, and reminding readers that Donald Blake is a symbiote host could be a clue that he’ll be back in a big way when Brand new poison starts in December.
Donald Blake’s appearance feels earned, thanks to writer Al Ewing’s careful plotting
Brand new poison #1 – Written by Al Ewing; Art by Carlos Gómez; Available December 4th from Marvel Comics
It’s no surprise that Immortal Thor is referring to Blake’s transformation, as this transformation happened in an issue co-written by Al Ewing. What’s most surprising is how natural this addition feels. There is a world where adding Venomized Donald Blake to Immortal it feels random and unearned. However, Immortal Thor It’s been full of omens of doom for Thor, so a horrible Blake actually fits the bill perfectly. What Donald Blake’s return really means for both of them Thor and Poison is in the air, But one thing is certain: it won’t be good for them.
The Immortal Thor #17 will be available November 20, 2024 from Marvel Comics.
