Mark Wahlberg
continues to be an important presence in Hollywood films, particularly in the action genre. Although it was Dance nights (1997) which served as Wahlberg’s big break, he would go on to star in films such as Italian work (2003), Four brothers (2005), Shooter (2007), and 2 weapons (2013). And not all of these films were unique. Wahlberg appeared in two Michael Bay films Transformers films like Cade Yeager.
Beyond action, though, Wahlberg has been a pillar of the comedy genreoften mixing the two. Wahlberg starred Spencer Confidential in 2020, which became a huge hit for Netflix. Continuing his foray into streaming action comedies, Wahlberg appeared on Apple TV+’s The Family Plan in 2023 and Netflix The Union in 2024, both audience successes, even if critics were not impressed.
Family Plan 2 is on the way
The action comedy broke a huge streaming record
After the first film became a huge success, Wahlberg will return to The Family Plan 2alongside other original stars. The Family Plan comes from director Simon Cellan Jones and features Wahlberg starring as Dan Morgan, a former assassin now living as a suburban father who must flee with his family after aspects of his past catch up with him. Also starring Michelle Monaghan and Ciarán Hinds, The Family Plan became Apple TV+’s most-watched film of all time and was, for a time, the streamer’s most-watched film of all time.
Litter now confirms that The Family Plan 2 is coming and should feature a lot of returning talent. In addition to Wahlberg, the sequel will feature the return of Jones as director, and Monaghan as Jessica Morgan, Dan’s wife. Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby will also return as Nina and Kyle Morgan, respectively. David Coggeshall, who wrote the first film, returns to write the script.
No production or release date for the film was given, but some early plot details were shared. According to the advertisement, the sequel will follow the Morgan family in Europe at Christmas after Dan plans the perfect vacation. The holiday comes under threat, however, when Dan’s past comes back once again to haunt him in surprising ways. Wahlberg shared an enthusiastic statement about going back to The Family Plan 2:
“I’m so excited to step back into Dan Morgan’s shoes again alongside my brilliant co-stars, and with Simon and David returning to the helm. Making ‘The Family Plan’ and seeing it become an instant hit with global audiences the way it did was incredibly rewarding. We can’t wait to collaborate again with our partners at Apple and Skydance on this next chapter for the Morgan family as their European vacation inevitably goes awry.”
Our opinion on family plan 2
The original leaves a lot of room for improvement
However The Family Plan was an audience success, the critical response to the film was very disappointing. The film currently has just 27% in Rotten tomatoesand was widely criticized in reviews for not offering strong action sequences or big laughs. Although the film fared better with audiences and has a score of 61% here, The Family Plan still struggled to rise beyond feeling somewhat generic and disposable.
The Family Plan 2then, it has the opportunity to improve where the original fell short. Wahlberg has proven his comedic and action chops before, so there’s certainly a lot of potential to build on these aspects of his movie star persona. Even though the sequel received a similarly poor critical reception, the response to the first film suggests that The Family Plan 2 It will be a huge audience success.
