The newbie guest star Ali Larter talks about her chances of returning as Dr. Grace Sawyer. Known for her multiple roles on the NBC show Heroes and for playing against Clear Rivers in the first two Final destination films, Larter recently returned to television in the oil saga Taylor Sheridan Landman. The series, streaming on Paramount+, marks Larter’s first starring role as a cast member since the short-lived 2016 baseball drama. Tone. But she resorted heavily during The newbie Season 2, playing the love interest of Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan.
In comments to FilmWebduring a press event for LandmanLarter reflected on her time as Grace Sawyer. The actress mentions that she enjoyed working at ABC, specifically citing her experience working with Fillion. Still, in the quote below, the Heroes former student talks about why she’s not as excited about working on a show like The newbie and what does it do Landman different:
It was so much fun to play Grace, and Nathan was also wonderful to work with. It’s interesting, you know, since we’ve moved outside of Hollywood, the idea of wanting to work in this kind of television isn’t that appealing to me. It’s been truly amazing working in Texas [for Landman] and do something super special. But it was great to be on The Rookie when I was on it and, you know, it was amazing.
The character was still important to John’s journey
The newbie 7th season, which premieres Tuesday, January 7th on ABCwill continue to highlight John. But he’s a slightly different character from when Larter was on the ABC series. Initially planned for just a few episodes, Grace Sawyer ended up appearing in most of season 2. After not seeing him for many years, she meets John by chance. They had an affair, which ended badly, and the spark is never fully rekindled when they cross paths again.

Grace and John become friendlier throughout Season 2, even seeming to move towards a relationship. However, Grace decides she would rather try to patch things up with her ex-husband for the sake of their eight-year-old son. They part, unlike in the past, on solid terms. Even if Grace doesn’t find her way back into the Alexi Hawley-created crime drama, she served its purpose of illuminating John’s arc and shedding light on the person he used to be.
She hasn’t done much TV
Except for a brief period early in her acting career, with guest roles in dramas such as Dawson Creek and Chicago HopeLarter’s roles have been most notable in films such as the Resident Evil franchise. Television procedures such as The newbie are a different beast, which doesn’t seem to have as much appeal to Larter as a project like Landman that crosses the line between prestige and pleasing the public.
