Mace Windu was the original hero of Star Wars, not Luke or Anakin

In some of the earliest iterations of Star WarsMace Windu was the hero, not Luke Skywalker or Anakin. The story that would eventually become A new hope went through many drafts and rewrites before becoming the pop culture phenomenon that viewers are familiar with today, but many large and small details from the early story concepts would find their way into canonical. Star Wars Franchise. Case in point: Mace Windu, a key character in the Star Wars Prequel trilogy that owes its name and some basic character details to George Lucas’s early story concepts.

In the context of the life-struggle Star Wars Movies, Mace Windu is a Jedi Lord who also holds the title of Lord of the Order, meaning that he presides over the Jedi Council. Mace Windu was also one of the most powerful and influential members of the Jedi Order during the prequel era and was thus one of the first Jedi to die when Palpatine (secretly Darth Sidious) executed his totalitarian coup. Although Mace Windu plays a major role in the films and stars in many non-film material, he is not the main hero of the original Six Saga films.

During the early development of what would become Star WarsGeorge Lucas wrote a two-page concept story called Journal of the Hills, Part I in 1973. The main character of the story is known as Mace Windy, and he is a Jedi-Bendu who serves as the chairman of the Alliance of Independent Systems. With some viewing Windy as more powerful than the Emperor, Windy is booted from the Jedi-Bendu by a conspiracy, although he continues to mentor CJ Thorpe, his apprentice.

Even as a two-page story concept, Journal of the Hills had a huge influence on the eventual canon Star Wars Saga. Of course, Mace Windy’s name would be slightly altered for the Jedi Master Mace Windu of the prequel era, but the similarities don’t end there. Both misses are Jedi and both suffer from conspiracies to remove them from powerAlthough the canonical Mace Windu is much more ill-fated.

Journal of the Hills Not only provided inspiration for Mace Windu But also key elements of the Star Wars Prequel trilogy itself. The story concept prominently features political intrigue and corruption in the Jedi as an institution and the government they serve. The name Alliance of Independent Systems also combines the respective names of both the Rebel Alliance and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, two major factions in the original six Star Wars Sage Films.
