While this may be one of the worst-reviewed films for both director and star of their careers, Incident is starting to get a second chance at streaming success. M. Night Shyamalan’s 2008 film stars Mark Wahlberg as high school science teacher Elliot Moore as he and his wife Alma race across the northeastern region of the United States in hopes of escaping the mysterious mass suicides plaguing the area. Also starring Zooey Deschanel and John Leguizamo. Incident The film was widely criticized upon release, having a Rotten Tomatoes critic approval rating of only 18%, but was a modest box office success.

Just a couple of weeks after Shyamalan found a new streaming home on the platform, Incident climbs Hulugraphics. At the time of writing The 2008 horror film is ranked No. 3 on the streamer’s “15 Best Movies Today” list.. The film is currently ranked behind two new Hulu Originals, with the satirical children’s show taking the top spot. Mr Crockett and second place went to the psychological period horror drama led by Sarah Paulson. Hold your breath.

As someone who was disappointed with Shyamalan’s 11-year run of poorly received films, it’s certainly hard for me to fully recommend Incident. The concept behind his story is certainly new, and there is certainly reason to believe that this is a great B-movie, reminiscent in many ways of such 50s classics as Drop. However, the overall tone of the film is still too inconsistent to even fully defend it from this perspective, something Shyamalan himself has acknowledged in the past when reflecting on the film.

However, one reason you might consider watching Incident is that they like films so bad that they are very interesting. Fans of films like the Tommy Wiseau film. Room or even Ed Wood Plan 9 from space will be delighted with Shyamalan’s film, namely for how awkwardly some of its dialogue is delivered.

Our take on The Happening’s streaming success

Shyamalan’s recent resurgence is likely a major factor

Mark Wahlberg as the serious Elliot and Zooey Deschanel as the troubled Alma sitting in a truck in The Happening

As for why Incident is suddenly finding success on streaming services, one of the most likely reasons is that Shyamalan’s career has experienced something of a renaissance in recent years.. Although the band led by James McAvoy Split was his big return to fame, his subsequent titles Glass And Old did not find the same response, even though the first film turned out to be one of the director’s highest-grossing films to date. Between the critical success of 2023 Knocking on the cabin and mixed or positive reaction to this year’s results Trapit is clear that audiences are ready to watch his work again.

Another likely factor why Incident doing so well on Hulu that it’s the Halloween season and viewers are subsequently looking for horror movies to watch. This seems no more obvious than the fact that of the top 15 on the streamer chart, two-thirds are horror-related games. If this late success leads to interest in other Shyamalan films on the platform, it might just end up completely dominating the Hulu charts for the rest of the month.
