Warning: SPOILERS ahead for 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5, episode 7!9-1-1: Lone Star showrunner Rashad Raisani revealed Nancy’s new role in season 5 following Tommy’s big decision as the final episodes continue to unfold. After her breast cancer diagnosis in the previous episode, Tommy (Gina Torres) struggled with what this meant for her work and her life in the future, ultimately deciding to step down as EMT captain at the end of 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5, episode 7. At the same time, she promotes Nancy (Brianna Baker) to the position while focusing on her health battle.
Talking to Weekly entertainmentRaisani explained how Tommy’s cancer diagnosis in 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 reflects how Nancy lost her mother to cancer early in her life. The showrunner explains the parallels, given how much she admired the former EMT captain. He also states how she will now have to “grow to adulthood“applying all the lessons he learned from his superior. Check out what Raisani has to say below:
Nancy will have to step up and lead. She always considered herself a kind of little sister when it came to Tommy, or even Tommy as a surrogate mother, and now her mother is sick – just like her childhood mother was sick. Nancy will now have to grow into adulthood and her leadership with the person she leans on most. We just thought it would be a great way to send us on our final journey of the series.
What Nancy’s New Role Means for 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5
She will have big shoes to fill with Tommy’s disappearance
The characters in 9-1-1: Lone Star We have always seen ourselves as a family, making it difficult for everyone to cope with any loss to their team. However, Nancy has always been close to Tommy, learning much under his leadership and becoming a trusted member of the 126 as her years with them grew. Losing her workplace mentor because of her battle with breast cancer will certainly be difficult, especially now that she has been given such an important job so quickly.
As for Tommy, his battle with cancer will no doubt include support from several characters, including his husband, Trevor (DB Woodside). Although it doesn’t appear that her current diagnosis will prompt her to leave 9-1-1: Lone Star before it ends, it will likely still have an emotional impact on the final five episodes of the season. But given how tough and caring she’s been with teammates like Nancy, she could still give her successor advice when needed, giving him the tools he needs to perform his duties without her.

Tommy made a big decision in giving his role as EMT captain to Nancy, showing not only how much she trusts her, but also how the series is starting to come to an end. The big staff changes that have been happening lately, from Judd (Jim Parrack) leaving the firehouse to Grace (Sierra McClain) working for Mercy Ships, reflect how the series is winding down toward the end. With five episodes left, 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 will likely bring even more surprises before the series finally reaches its series finale.
