Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers for 9-1-1: Lone Star, season 5, episode 8, “The Quiet Ones.”
All season, Carlos Reyes has been trying to find his father’s killer, and while 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5 Episode 8 suggests that their search is over, the most likely option is that the latest suspect is just a distraction from the real killer. The Fox procedural drama series follows the work and personal lives of first responders in Austin, Texas, which includes Carlos, a police officer turned Texas Ranger. Carlos was the main character in 9-1-1: Lone Star from the beginning, and his final story as the show comes to an end revolves around the death of his father.
THE 9-1-1: Lone Star The Season 5 fall finale airs Monday, December 2nd at 8pm ET on Fox. So only two episodes remain in the season until the series finale 9-1-1: Lone Star falls on February 3, 2025.
Carlos’ father, Gabriel Reyes, died at the end of 9-1-1: Lone Star season 4, just before his son’s wedding. An unknown assailant rang Gabriel’s doorbell, and when he answered, the person shot and killed him. They fled before anyone could identify who they were and Carlos has been looking for them ever since. Carlos even becomes a Texas Ranger, like his father, after learning that Gabriel was looking for a mole in the law enforcement agency shortly before his death. In 9-1-1: Lone Star In season 5, episode 8, Carlos receives information that completely changes his investigation.
9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5 Episode 8 Suggests Campbell Killed Carlos’ Father
Campbell is Carlos’ partner
Carlos continues to investigate his father’s death in 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5, Episode 8, which takes him to an informant Gabriel knew, Nestor Grimes. Carlos and his partner, Ranger Campbell, rescue Nestor from a trap. However, the doctors cannot do anything for him in the hospital. Thus, Nestor asks to see Gabriel, completely shocking Carlos, who then visits the dying man in his room. With his last breath, Nestor tells Gabriel that there was five ICs from different Ranger cases exhausted by a spy. Here comes the real kicker – Nestor reveals that Gabriel told him to “be careful” and to be wary of Campbell.
When Carlos returns to the hospital waiting room, he tells Campbell and Chief Ranger Bridges that Nestor is dead. He also lies and says that Nestor didn’t give him any information. “The Quiet Ones” ends on that note, leaving viewers to believe that Campbell had something to do with Gabriel’s death. However, it is unlikely that Campbell killed Carlos’ father, and Nestor’s mention of his name is just a red herring. 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5.
Why Campbell Killing Gabriel Is Unbelievable
Campbell has been a loyal partner
Until 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5, Episode 8, no one had reason to believe that Campbell killed Gabriel, which is why the reveal of the hour is so surprising. Despite Nestor’s last words, it is difficult to believe that Campbell was involved in Gabriel’s murder. No other evidence (as of this writing) points to Campbell being nefarious, making the ending of episode 8 feel more like a red herring than a shocking truth. Besides, there’s plenty of time left before 9-1-1: Lone Star ends after season 5, and a reveal like this should be saved until the show gets closer to the finale.
Whatever the case, Carlos needs to solve his father’s murder before 9-1-1: Lone Star ends, and if his instincts serve him well, he’ll figure out that Campbell probably isn’t the killer.
After displaying 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5, Episode 8, Parker Young, who plays Campbell, spoke with TV insider. The actor discussed the cliffhanger and joked about it Carlos probably shouldn’t trust Nestor’s information. Young man said:
“I am [Carlos’] partner. I proved to him that I’m a solid guy. I make good recommendations when it comes to how he can handle situations with his husband and when it comes to birthday gifts and things like that. So yes, I think I’ve proven myself to be a trustworthy gentleman and I think you should take my side, give me the benefit of the doubt over some dying criminal.”
If Campbell didn’t murder Gabriel in 9-1-1: Lone Star, who did?
Carlos should be looking at Chief Ranger Bridges
If Campbell is a red herring 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5, so Gabriel’s killer is still out there and has not been identified. However, the most likely suspect is Chief Ranger Bridges. His reactions and mannerisms throughout the hour seem suspicious, and it seems like the writers are dropping hints that Chief Ranger Bridges is the real culprit.

THE 9-1-1: Lone Star character who the murdered Carlos’ father has to be part of the Texas Rangers, given the fact that Gabriel was investigating a mole before someone killed him. The preview for episode 9 also heavily features Chief Ranger Bridges. He’s apparently pressuring Carlos to take down Campbell, which the person who actually killed Gabriel would certainly do to shift the blame onto someone else. Whatever the case, Carlos needs to solve his father’s murder before 9-1-1: Lone Star ends, and if his instincts serve him well, he’ll figure out that Campbell probably isn’t the killer.
