Notice! Spoilers ahead Krampus!Fans can finally solve this problem, because Krampus' Tie-in comic gives an official answer to the film's open ending. The 2015 horror/comedy has become a holiday staple for many, but the film's final scene has sparked debate among many. Luckily, the lesser-known 'sequel' gives fans all the answers they want.
In Krampus: Shadow of Saint Nicholas by Todd Casey, Michael Doughtery, Zach Shields, Laura Shields, Christian Diabari, Maan House, Stuart Sayger and Michael Montenat, three individuals are visited by Santa's sinister companion, who puts them through trials that help them find the Christmas spirit.
Fortunately, just like Max and his family in the film, each of these individuals learns the lesson they need to learn. As they celebrate the holiday with a renewed sense of life and purpose, everyone finds the same gift, a bell left by Krampus to remind them that he is still watching.
Krampus' Comic confirms that it does not punish those who learned their lesson
No, Max and his family aren't trapped in a snow globe or reliving Christmas forever
Krampus is a film about a boy named Max whose love for Christmas fades after tensions rise with his family. After wishing his family would go away, Max's house is besieged by Krampus, Santa's companion, who punishes those who gave up on the holiday and each other. After Krampus grants Max's wish, the boy tearfully begs for his family's lives, causing the entity to undo the night he put them through. But on Christmas morning, the family finds a Krampus bell and the final scene is the Engels' house in a snow globe in Krampus' workshop.
Some viewed the ending more optimistically, saying Krampus let the Engels live, but he's keeping an eye out. Others take a more pessimistic view, saying that Krampus has actually trapped them in a snow globe and is forcing them to relive Christmas Day over and over again. This interpretation is arguably scarier, especially given that Krampus has thousands of snow globes in his workshop and an unknown number of families suffering the same fate. Fortunately, for those who prefer the 'nicer' ending, Krampus' Comic tie-in shows the entity is kinder than fans think.
Krampus' The True Ending Is More Suitable for the Holiday Season
Krampus He wants People to become better
Unlike the film, there is no indication that the three people visited by Krampus in Shadow of Saint Nicholas were imprisoned or still being punished. They, along with Max, learned their lesson and enjoyed the festive season. The only 'scary' part of these endings is the bell left by Krampus, but hey, what better way to make sure they don't lose the Christmas spirit again than to make sure they have an awesome reminder? These encounters ultimately show that Krampus doesn't just want to punish, he wants people to grow.
Is it disturbing to think that Max and his family are still trapped in a snow globe? Absolutely. But ultimately this is a story about second chances, and what is Christmas if not a time for second chances? Krampus isn't a cuddly or beloved figure like Santa Claus, but in this story he aims to show people (through admittedly extreme measures) not to lose sight of what's important about the holidays. At the very least, fans can rest easy knowing that the finale of Krampus It's not as nihilistic as they may have originally thought.
