Jim Parsons’ 6M Sci-Fi Comedy Finds New Life on Streaming 9 Years Later

A star-studded sci-fi comedy Jim Parsons got a boost in streaming nine years after its debut. Parsons is best known for playing the role of Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theorywhich he reprized as the narrator of the prequel series Young Sheldonstarring Iain Armitage as the younger version of the character. In addition to starring in all 12 seasons of the iconic sitcom, over the years, Parsons has won four Emmys for his performance as Sheldon, among six nominations for the role.

THE Big Bang Theory star has also starred in a variety of projects across multiple genres, despite being best known for playing Sheldon Cooper. This includes Ryan Murphy’s historical drama Hollywoodthe autobiographical romantic comedy Spoiler alertand the Ted Bundy crime drama, led by Zac Efron Extremely wicked, shockingly evil and vile. However, despite Sheldon’s predilection for the genre, Parsons himself has only appeared in one science fiction filmwhich has now hit a major streaming chart.

Home became a streaming hit

Parsons plays an eccentric alien invader in the 2015 film

Parsons’ 2015 film Home has now appeared on the charts of a major streaming platform. The DreamWorks animated feature followed an eccentric alien named Oh (Parsons), who befriends human teenager Tip Tucci (Rihanna) during his species’ attempted invasion of Earth. THE Home the cast also included Steve Martin, Matt Jones, Jennifer Lopez and Frank Welker. Although the film has a score of 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, its audience score is 64% and it grossed $386 million against its $135 million budget.

Now, Home began climbing the charts on the NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock. He fell in 5th place on the streamer’s daily chart of the top 10 films. It is by far the oldest film in the Top 5, as well as the seasonally appropriate film The Grinch (2018) firstly, the rest of the chart is made up of releases from 2024, i.e. Twisted (No. 2), Despicable Me 4 (No. 3), and The Super Mario Bros. movie (No. 4).

It seems unlikely that the streaming success of Jim Parsons The film will lead to talk of a sequel, as there have never been any major moves towards a sequel to the DreamWorks film, despite its theatrical success. However, a possible outcome of its success on Peacock could be the return of the 2D animated spinoff series Home: Adventures with Tip & Ohwhich premiered on Netflix in 2016 but was removed from the platform in April 2024. If the film continues to perform well, Peacock may be encouraged to find a way to add the four-season show to its library.
