Carrey's success as a leading comedic actor continued into the 2000s starting with How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000which became the second highest-grossing Christmas film of all time, and continued with Bruce Almighty, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Eventsand Yes man in the following years. In 2009, Carrey played several characters in the 3D animated adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic story A Christmas songproviding the voices of Ebenezer Scrooge as well as the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.

Directed by Ron Howard based on the 1957 children's book by Dr. Seuss the live-action adaptation follows the famous story of the grumpy, green titular recluse living in Mount Crumpit, who despises Christmas and all the merry inhabitants of Whoville and sets out to sabotage the holiday celebration. The film stars Jim Carrey as the Grinch alongside Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Bill Irwin, Molly Shannon and Anthony Hopkins as the narrator.
