Jennifer Aniston settles a debate surrounding one of Rachel’s most famous dresses from Friends Another streaming update changes the picture. In the season 3 episode “The One Where No One Is Ready,” the gang pushes Ross (David Schwimmer) to near breaking point when they all take forever to get ready for a special event at his museum. For her part, Rachel (Aniston) can’t decide what to wear, frustrating Ross to no end. In the end, she emerges wearing a beautiful dress that leaves Ross speechless.
In the original episode, Rachel’s dress is a shade of green. however, Maxs revamped 4K image has inexplicably turned the garment into a completely different color. The streaming service noted this in an Instagram post, showing the two dresses side by side. The HD image shows Rachel’s green dress, while the 4K visual turns it blue.
This led to confusion among fans commenting on the post, with many calling out the baffling change and questioning why it needed to happen. Aniston soon weighed in on her Instagram story (via People), immediately confirm, “For the record, the dress was mint green.”
What Friends’ dress change means
So-called enhanced visuals are not always better
With technology improving greatly over the years, it is now common practice to enhance the visuals of older movies and shows with the aim of making the picture crisper and brighter. However, many have been quick to point out that the supposed “better” visuals actually diminish what’s already there. One of the biggest and most recent examples can be seen in the remasters of two James Cameron movies, Aliens And True read.
In the case of FriendsThe much-anticipated 4K edit has completely changed the overall aesthetic of the scene. Even beyond Rachel’s dress, Aniston’s skin tone has changed, to the point where she looks more pink than tan. Although the blue still looks good, it is far from the image audiences are most used to, which is a sight that left Ross (and probably many others) in awe. This is just more proof that sometimes, the visuals of the last decade should stay as they are.
