Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Costume Has a Connection to Wicked’s Glinda

Wednesday Addams by Jenna Ortega, as seen on Netflix Wednesdayis hardly the character fans would expect to bear any resemblance to Ariana Grande’s Glinda from Evil. The daughter of the Addams Family is famously macabre and isolated, liking all things horrible and scary and making wonderful, deadpan jokes. “Galinda”, the future Glinda the Good, is bright, cheerful and sociable, finding herself in a story that also explores the school years of an iconic character. Wednesday and Evil also demonstrate a similar plot point with opposing roommates slowly becoming friends, as is what happens when Wednesday lives with Enid (Emma Myers).

Wednesday The season 1 finale exemplifies this arc between Wednesday and Enid, although as far as this parallel goes, Wednesday would be the counterpart to Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), the future Wicked Witch of the West. Even with Netflix’s biggest changes Wednesday does to Ortega’s character, she might still like it if people called her by the title “evil” (a term they probably used to refer to her at some point). However, Wednesday shares a strange connection with Glinda as they change things and people around them in unique ways and generally manage to do what they want, despite any school rules.

Wednesday Addams and Glinda The Good inexplicably manage to wear school uniforms in their signature colors

Wednesday wears black and Glinda wears pink, while Nevermore and Shiz’s uniforms are blue.

Wednesday and Glinda, for hidden reasons, are allowed to wear customized versions of their respective schools’ uniforms. Wednesday’s excuse is that she is “allergic to color, which apparently earned him a specially ordered uniform. The rest of the student body wears striped blazers that appear blue or purple in different scenes (likely affected by lighting), while Wednesday wears a black and gray version. Wednesday is, of course, famous for her completely monochromatic wardrobe to match her spooky personality.

Glinda simply breaks the rules, like Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Glinda and Elphaba are in their 20s in Evilattending a university. Shiz University’s uniforms also sometimes incorporate blue stripes, although what each student wears suggests the rules are more flexible. Elphaba, in both the stage and screen versions, wears something that still stands out from the pack, but is probably some variation of what Shiz mandates her students to wear. On the other hand, Glinda shows up to class wearing a pink version (cream colored on stage) which definitely doesn’t meet the dress code. Glinda simply breaks the rules, like Wednesday.

Wednesday and Glinda dominate their worlds with their different brands of charisma

What Wednesday and Glinda certainly have in common, being allowed to use their school wardrobes, is that they are both very charismatic, in completely different ways. The worlds they live in move around them; Wednesday because everyone is afraid of her and Glinda because everyone loves her. The Nevermore faculty may question Wednesday’s “allergy,” but no one will fight her if they don’t have to. Glinda charms most supervisors and teachers as well as her colleagues to get what she wants.

Additionally, the settings of Wednesday and Evil They tell serious stories, but they’re still not as grounded as some epic fantasy properties. They are whimsical in bizarre ways, and one senses that these main characters affect the environment in a more metatextual sense. Strict logic might require knowing what Glinda said to wear her custom uniform, but the tone of the story doesn’t make it something that actually seems strange. Likewise, Wednesday Addams is too big a personality for the Wednesday environment and you can do whatever you want.
