The James Gunn trailer Superman film is found Smallville in an edition I didn't know I needed until now. The trailer for Superman was first released online in December 2024, teasing the massive DCU film ahead of its July 2025 release date. As the true beginning of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters of the DCU, Superman faces a lot of pressure, but reactions to the teaser trailer have been overwhelmingly positive. As many expect Superman becomes one of the best classified Superman movies, fan edits, and theories are becoming commonplace.
One of the best fan edits comes courtesy of powerful_ravioli on TikTok. The edition combines the trailer for Superman with the iconic theme song from Smallville's intro, providing a mash-up of two Son of Krypton eras.
The section of the trailer used comes after David Corenswet's Superman tells Krypto, the Supergod, to take him home. Epic scenes of Superman in action, Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor are shown when Remy Zero's "Save Me" explodes.
What does the Superman trailer edit with the Smallville theme song mean?
Above all, the meaning of Superman being edited with SmallvilleThe theme song is simply that there are many beloved eras of the iconic DC hero. While Superman hasn't been released yet, the trailer proved how strongly James Gunn understands the character, leading many to already hold the iteration in high regard. By combining this with SmallvilleIn the theme song, it's clear how the mix of this new era with an older one still works.
Smallville ended in 2011, but remains one of the most popular iterations of the character. Despite its smaller scale and TV pitfalls, Smallville solidified Tom Welling's Superman as the definitive version of the character for an entire generation. This was proven most of all by the editing of the show's theme song with Gunn's Superman trailer, summing up the love that exists for so many iterations of the Man of Steel.
Our opinion on editing the Superman trailer with the Smallville theme song
Gunn's inspirations are clear
In addition to what I mentioned previously, the Superman trailer being edited with SmallvilleMe's theme song made me realize how much Gunn is letting past iterations influence his version of Superman. Gunn made no secret of the fact that his Superman the story will pay homage to what came before while also marking a beginning for the DCU, which the TikTok edit above proves. The fact that Smallville the theme song doesn't feel out of place next to Gunn's Superman is certainly a sign of that.
Smallville is a show that many consider to be a near-perfect representation of the character. Although it has its problems, SmallvilleClark and Superman's characterization is beloved, which Gunn will no doubt be aware of. The elements that show Clark in SupermanThe trailer matches the song very well, potentially suggesting that the DCU's version of the character will align with that of smallville, while also taking cues from the DCEU version, Brandon Routh's Superman, and of course Christopher Reeve as well.
