In a question and answer session at Superman trailer press event where TelaRant was present, director James Gunn explains why David Corenswet's hero is seriously injured at the start of the Superman trailer. According to Gunn, Superman represents the inherent goodness of the American people, which “can be seen as boring and under siege [by] some of the darkest voices.”. Read Gunn's full comments below:
“We have a battered Superman at the beginning. This is our country. I believe in the goodness of human beings and I believe that the majority of people in this country, despite their ideological beliefs and their politics, are doing their best to survive and be good people – despite what it may look like on the other side, it doesn't matter whatever the other side is. This film is about that. It's about the basic goodness of human beings, and that can be seen as boring and beleaguered. [by] some of the darkest voices are some of the loudest voices.”
James Gunn also discussed the Superman trailer exclusively with Variety after the question and answer session. In Gunn's conversation with Varietythe director expresses his satisfaction in exploring Superman's practical goodness rather than focusing on his physical power, which could have become “a fascist power fantasy”. “I'm excited for people to see the essence of what we're doing, because it really has been a private secret that we've all been hoarding. We feel really good about it, from a moral standpoint, from the beginning, we all felt that We were doing something good, both in terms of quality and in terms of something that wasn't a fascist power fantasy. I'm not saying that about other hero films in general.
