Spider-Man debuted in amazing imagination #15 in 1962, and then received his own series the following year. J. Jonah Jameson made his debut appearance on the very first page of The Amazing Spider-Man #1. Even earlier Marvel’s own editors figured out whether “Spider-Man” should be hyphenated, Jonah Yemson has already called the webslinger a threat. Jameson’s characterization has changed a lot over the years, varying from a curmudgeonly but caring boss to an incredibly unscrupulous businessman, more interested in selling newspapers than reporting the truth – but his feud with Spidey remains his defining trait.

Jameson’s backstory – eventually presented in the anthology series Spider-Man’s Tangled Web #20, by current Spider-Man writer Zeb Wells with art by Dean Hespiel – showed him in the guise of his diminutive father, who everyone else saw as a manly war hero. This reinforced his belief that anyone seen as a hero by the general public must be hiding dark secrets, or committing some other crime outside of the limelight. Even when the Wallcrawler saved members of his family, Jameson only paused, but never canceled, his personal vendetta against Spider-Man.
