A forgotten tease from five years ago laid the groundwork for another version of King Ghidorah to appear in the Monsterverse. In Godzilla: King of the MonstersLegendary’s Monsterverse introduced its version of King Ghidorah as an old rival of Godzilla. Not unlike the way his Toho counterpart is traditionally depicted, this incarnation of Monster Zero is a creature from a distant planet. As the only known alien Titan in the Monsterverse, Ghidorah has a certain uniqueness, but interestingly, there are indications that perhaps Ghidorah isn’t the outsider he originally appeared to be.
The idea of Ghidorah not being alone goes beyond the notion that the creature may have shared Earth with other alien Titans. In fact, there may be other creatures of the same species somewhere in the Monsterverse. The Monsterverse films themselves haven’t directly confirmed this as fact, butThe 2019 film novelization actually pointed to Ghidorah having a relative nearby. What’s worse, this other Ghidorah could be even more powerful than the Titan Godzilla faced in Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ end.
How the Monsterverse Teased the Existence of Another King Ghidorah
According to one legend, Ghidorah supposedly left his home planet for the sake of his brother
In Godzilla: King of the Monstersit was Zhang Ziyi’s Dr. Ling who identified Ghidorah by name, having linked the three-headed dragon Titan to a legendary creature and assumed he was from outer space. The film’s novelization expanded by featuring excerpts from Dr. Ling’s research into Ghidorah’s past. In addition to Ghidorah being an alien, Dr. Ling heard that Ghidorah was a “youngest son.” Because of this, he “wouldn’t inherit territory, so he came here to find his own.” Not only does this provide a possible explanation for Ghidorah’s arrival on Earth, but it also sets up a similar version of the creature.
If Ghidorah were a “youngest son“who felt he had to leave his home planet to gain power that would mean he has an older and perhaps stronger brother. This idea carries some dangerous implications especially when we take into consideration how close Ghidorah came to killing Godzilla and terraforming the planet . any monster that had Ghidorah in its shadow must be a force to be reckoned with.
Since it was thousands of years ago that Ghidorah came to Earth, there’s no telling what might have happened to his older brother (if he even existed). Theoretically, he could still be there, ruling his home planet. But given all the time that has passed, all sorts of different scenarios could have played out, many of which being situations where Ghidorah’s relative moved on. He could be out there looking for new worlds to conquer, and if he is, it’s not implausible that he would end up in the same area of space as Ghidorah all those centuries ago. If that happens, he could have his own conflict with Godzilla.
Classic Toho Godzilla Films May Explain Monsterverse’s Second Ghidorah Setting
In Toho’s films, there isn’t just one Ghidorah
The concept of a second Ghidorah isn’t unheard of in the Godzilla universe, which is one reason why it’s not incomprehensible to the Monsterverse. There are actually two different versions of Ghidorah’s story that the Monsterverse could take inspiration from if it went in that direction. The first takes place Mothra’s Rebirth, which introduced Desghidorah, a monster similar but not identical to King Ghidorah. The connection with the most popular monster made more sense later Rebirth of Mothra IIIwhich brought in the most powerful King Ghidorah and established the two villains as relatives.
Desghidorah never got the chance to fight Godzilla as he never appeared outside of the Mothra’s Rebirth trilogy, but the concept led to yet another variation of King Ghidorah
Desghidorah never got the chance to fight Godzilla as he never appeared outside of the Mothra’s Rebirth trilogy, but the concept led to yet another variation of King Ghidorah. Part of what made Desghidorah stand out from the traditional version of the kaiju was his construction; he stood on four legs instead of two. The franchise recycled this idea by creating the design of the main villain of Godzilla: Final WarsKaizer Ghidorah, also known as Monster
As a creature armed by aliens, Kaizer Ghidorah has an origin that compares him to the original Ghidorah from the 1960s Godzilla films, but his name and menacing design create a clear distinction between him and Monster Zero. “Kaiser“translates into”Emperor“in Japanese, so there is definitely a meaning to his name; an emperor’s power is greater in scale than that of a king, which shows Toho’s efforts to make Kaizer Ghidorah seem like the superior version of the kaiju.
Could Kaizer Ghidorah appear in the Monsterverse?
The franchise’s history when it comes to multiple versions of Ghidorah and the suggestion that there is a second one out there raises speculation that such a Titan could threaten the Monsterverse at some point in the future. As for what form it would take, Legendary could invent its own or use one of two pre-existing alternatives. Of the two, the stronger option for this role is Kaizer Ghidorah. Due to Mothra’s Rebirth Not being a Godzilla film and therefore having less visibility in the franchise, Desghidorah is arguably less appealing, even if his origin allowed him to take on this role without issue.
Kaizer Ghidorah, on the other hand, is remembered as a powerful member of Godzilla’s rogues gallery and would be a standout addition to the Monsterverse’s Titans lineup. It is not implausible that, given his reputation, King of the Monsters’ allusion to a relative of Ghidorah was a subtle hint at the existence of Kaizer Ghidorah in the Monstroverse. That said, there is still no evidence that the Monsterverse will act on this reference. After all, using him would risk taking away what made Ghidorah special, as he would no longer be unique in the Monsterverse.
Another major obstacle to Kaizer Ghidorah joining the Monsterverse is the fact that It’s clear that Legendary has more unique options available when it comes to Godzilla’s next villain.. Gigan, Biollante, and Destororyah are interesting choices in their own right, and could garner more interest than another version of a villain that Godzilla recently fought in 2019. But, with the Monsterverse expanding through new TV shows and possibly new films (including one Godzilla vs. Kong sequel) is also on the way, its debut remains an avenue that Legendary could explore later.
Legendary could avoid a retread of Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Rivalry between Godzilla and Ghidorah if he uses him as an opponent for another monster in one of Apple TV + planned Monsterverse spinoffs. Or, true to his image as a kaiju with greater strength than King Ghidorah, he could be presented as an enemy that Godzilla cannot defeat without Kong’s help.
In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the cryptozoological agency Monarch faces a battery of god-sized monsters known as Titians. Among these creatures is the mighty Godzilla, who clashes with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate enemy, the three-headed king Ghidorah.
