Warning: Spoilers for One Piece chapter #1126
Luffy’s Grandpa Garp is easily one of the strongest One piece characters, but the vice admiral’s biggest fight during the Egghead Island arc has a surprising result that has fans wondering if he’s still Alive or dead. Garp officially reveals himself as the straw hat captain’s grandfather after the lobby incident, of course One pieces best arc. He also played a massive role in mentoring some great Marines, but one of his students would be undoing.
Author Eiichiro Oda often teased as strong monkey d. Garp was, especially with his reputation as the hero of the Marines. In the past, he teamed up with his longtime nemesis, Gol D. Roger, to help destroy history’s strongest pirate crew, the Rocks Pirates. But since then, he has helped train Marines, some of whom have gone on to become admirals. His most promising student, Kobe, is captured to save many innocent lives, but in an attempt to save his student, Garp pushes his considerable abilities to their limits, and chapter #1126 finally reveals if he survived his battle.
What happened to Garp on Fullalead Island?
Garp’s legendary entrance and Fullallead battle took place on episode #1114 & #1115
After Coby is captured and held on the Blackbeard pirate group’s home base, Fullalead Island, Garp and members of the rogue marine group SWORD take it upon themselves to rescue him. While the anime showed the entrance of Luffy’s grandfather with the strongest attack ever shown in One pieceMany of Blackbeard’s Titanic captains prevented Kobe’s rescue from succeeding without an accident. In order to ensure that Kobi and the rest of the swords would leave, Garp occupied them. And while the rescue was ultimately a success, it came at a significant cost.
The hero of the marines is long past his prime, but he proved himself more than capable against the former admiral turned pirate, Kuzan. The terrifyingly strong Ice Devil Fruit user was once Garp’s student, and despite their differences, held them both in high esteem. With the help of some of the most broken Devil Fruit users on Blackbeard’s crew, Cousin defeats the Vice Admiral, and the battle ends with a giant icicle sticking out of the Laughing Old Man’s chest in Chapter #1088.
Coby demanded that the rescue ships return to rescue his mentor, but the vice admiral ordered them to leave the island as fast as they could. Garp’s sacrifice saved the next generation of Marines, whom he thoroughly believed would be the future of the Navy. The last readers saw of Luffy’s grandfather was him lying on the ground, half-frozen with an ice spike through his chest and a big smile on his face. However, chapter #1126 finally revealed that Garp survived his battle against the Blackbeard Pirates and his former student Cousin.
One piece confirms that Garp is still alive
It took many of Blackboard’s strongest captains to submit to Luffy’s grandfather.
The Egghead arc featured some game-changing events that helped the arc really feel like the beginning of One pieces latest saga, many of which involved the Blackboard Pirates, whose captain seems the closest to becoming the next Pirate King. However, Marshall D. Teach was not thrilled to return to see his base in shambles, and many of his captives escaped. However, his mood has shifted dramatically after learning that his bargaining chip to the Navy upgraded from Marine Captain Coby to Vice Admiral Garp, who is now chained and injured in Fullalead’s prison.
“…if Cousin isn’t fully committed to his new pirate life, he might help Garp escape.”
Cousin’s alliance with the Blackbeard Pirates was a shocking twist for many One piece Fans, but there is still the possibility that he has not completely turned. He claimed that he believed he had killed Garp, but despite his severe injuries, the vice admiral was still alive. While the newest Blackboard Titanic captain played a massive role in subduing the powerful relic of the past, he has yet to commit any irredeemable acts. Kuzan may be operating as a deep-cover SWORD member who will eventually betray Blackbeard.

The clash between Garp and Kuzan was an emotional bout as both characters had spent many years training together and shared a similar sense of justice. But, as Cousin pointed out during their battle, almost Everyone Garp raised ended up turning against him, except CobyWhich added another satisfying layer to the intricacies of the storyline. With Garp still alive, a scene with him and Cousin has the potential for heartbreaking drama and the opportunity to explore the complex emotions that must go through the former high-ranking Marine’s mind.
What will be Garp’s role in the finale of One Piece
The vice admiral may be less helpful than Blackbeard anticipates
Kaido was a pirate who was regarded as the One piece The world’s strongest creature who escaped prison multiple times. Although Garp is not as powerful as Kaido, it would be reasonably easy for Luffy’s grandfather to escape almost any confinement. However, with his injuries and even more of Blackboard’s powerful crew members now back on base, Garp escaping Fullallead Island is highly unlikely unless he gets some help.
Blackbeard’s reasons for needing a high-ranking marine hostage are uncertain, but if Cousin isn’t fully committed to his new pirate life, he could help Garp escape. However, with Dr. Vegapunk’s message bringing attention to the mysterious moniker, The world government may be less likely to make a deal for Monkey D. Garp’s life. Garp had a small relationship with the leaders of the world, so he never accepted a promotion. After the events of Egghead, the world’s rulers may be less willing to cooperate with the free-spirited personalities who happen to sport the letter D in their names.
The vice admiral captive has a few One piece Characters who might want to save him. While Luffy had a strong bond with his grandfather, it is unlikely that the news of Garp’s disappearance will divert the Straw Hats’ journey to Elbaf and find Roger’s treasure. And the news of the Straw Hat crew’s progress reinvigorated Kobi’s desire to confront Luffy in what might be One pieces most heartbreaking battle, instead of working to save his mentor. Still, author Eiichiro Oda had plans for Garp earlier One piece ends; Otherwise, his storyline would have ended with his emotionally poignant sacrifice.
