Iron Man’s new power source and armor explained

After destroying all of your existing costumes Iron Man was forced to create a new armor from scratch, one that runs on a power source that Iron Man has never tested before. Although Tony has always been a man of practical science, he will need to learn the ways of magic to defeat this new villain.

Iron Man #5 – written by Spencer Ackerman, with art by Julius Ohta – begins after Tony Stark’s extensive collection of Iron Man suits is destroyed by antagonist Justine Hammer, using the hero’s weakness to magic.

Using a magical virus, Justine disables all of Tony’s armor, destroying them and leaving Tony with nothing. Tony can’t even turn to his company as it is in the process of a hostile takeover perpetuated by Roxxon and AIM. This leaves Tony with nothing, and he will have to create a new suit from scratch that is not susceptible to mystical attacks.

Iron Man has been through hostile takeovers before; many people tried to steal his company and armor from him. Despite this, he always managed to come out on top. But now, villain Justine Hammer has returned from the dead to steal Tony’s legacy once and for all. While Tony has some of the most advanced defenses against viruses and hackers, Justine has a trick up her sleeve that Tony Stark isn’t used to. After attacking one of Iron Man’s factories Justine manages to send a magical virus to Tony’s servers, and the effects are devastating.

There have been several power sources for Iron Man’s armor over the years. Originally, a major plot point in the Iron Man comics was the fact that his armor could simply run out of power mid-mission. This meant that Tony would have to bring the armor back home and recharge it somehow. Sometimes it was solar panels, sometimes it was as simple as plugging the armor into a wall socket. It was a ridiculous weakness, and Iron Man comics have all but forgotten it nowadays. Marvel would eventually go ahead and give Iron Man a different power source for his armor that was much less ridiculous.

Iron Man Armor Weakness

Later in his comic book history, Iron Man began using the Repulsor Tech node. This power source would be used for almost all of his new armor going forward, including his Bleeding Edge armor. The Repulsor Tech node was quite an interesting piece of technology, as it could do a lot more than just power your armor. When Pepper Potts was caught in an explosion and nearly died, Tony was able to install an RT node into her body, which granted her increased healing, the power of light over magnetic fields, and the ability to project energy blasts. As incredible as this is, It’s nothing compared to the power source Tony will need to defeat his latest enemy.

Tony has the chance to change everything, he just needs to build a new suit of armor with a new source of magical power.

Now, Justine Hammer is attacking Tony Stark with magic and science. Tony was caught off guard and lost everything, all because he wasn’t used to dealing with magic. Fortunately, Tony has the chance to change everything, he just needs to build a new suit of armor with a new source of magical power. Exactly how Tony will do this is unclear, but future solicitations have revealed that Tony will team up with Scarlet Witch at some point, and there are few more powerful magic users in the Marvel Universe than Wanda. With her help, he could certainly create the most powerful Iron Man suit ever.

Iron Man’s ability to make something out of even the most scattered materials is his most valuable skill

Now, Tony Stark must master magic

Tony Stark is an undisputed genius, and although he hasn’t dabbled in both magic and science, there’s no doubt that he’ll eventually get a firm grip on how to use it. Tony created armor with all sorts of absurd things. He created armor from dead symbiotes and even the bodies of Celestials. It seems like there’s really nothing Tony can’t create armor forand he’s going to prove it now by creating an Iron Man suit that uses magic.

Tony Stark has created armor upgrades for dozens of heroes, not just himself. He was responsible for Spider-Man’s iconic Iron Spider suit and also created new weapons for Elektra’s Daredevil. He has experience creating a variety of armor and weapons for countless different heroes, from very different materials. Although he did not create armor specifically powered by magic, there is no doubt that Iron Man will absolutely be able to do this, and if he wants to defeat his latest villain, he will have to do it.

Iron Man #5 will be available on February 26, 2025 from Marvel Comics.
