Best known for its array of armor options and continually innovating technology, Iron Man There is no shortage of technical updates to utilize and expand upon. THE 100th Anniversary Special – Guardians of the Galaxy #1 it featured one of his most impressive suits to date. Unfortunately, this particular model hasn’t been seen again, which is surprising and highly disappointing given the potential it could have for Marvel across multiple mediums.
100th Anniversary Special – Guardians of the Galaxy #1 features the creative team of Andy Lanning, Ron Marz, Gustavo Duarte, Edgar Delgado and Joe Sabino. It pits the titular team of heroes against Silver Galactus, with the help of a variant of Iron Man from the future (Earth-14971). In true Tony Stark fashion, the armor enhances nanotechnology, significantly expanding the suit’s capabilities. While several Marvel comics and even the MCU have toyed with Iron Man’s use of nanotechnology – such as the Mark L armor – this armor takes things a step further.

Released in 2014, this edition shows Iron Man’s armor dividing into independent nanorobots, agglomerating to create the suit. This individualization allows for a wider variety of functionality, rather than being a singular, bulky unit like Stark’s classic suit. This iteration of Iron Man expands the suit’s capabilities, explaining that the suit works through “Tony Stark’s consciousness downloaded into nanite form.” Referred to as “Iron Manites”, the nanobots can be given independent tasks beyond the suit. Separating it creates a new attack and reconnaissance technique that allows the Marvel hero to get much closer to his enemies with a reduced chance of detection.
This Guardians of the Galaxy special sees Iron Man use the Iron Manites to begin scouting Silver Galactus’ neural system, giving us a closer look at the celestial and how to begin defeating him. Iron Man often mixes and explores new technologies with his suits, such as using Extremis in Iron Man (2004) #1-9 and the bonding of symbiotes with the Endo-Sym suit, also introduced in 2014. Iron Man’s experiments with symbiotes and his suits have returned in recent comics, but the nanobot division’s armor has not had a similar revival.

Lately, Iron Man has been dealing with the fallout from the theft of Stark Unlimited, leaving him quite busy with domestic matters back on Earth. He’s also had no shortage of impressive, upgraded armor, like his recent mystery armor. However, some Nanobite allies could be useful in their ongoing fight against Roxxon, AIM, and Justine Hammer. He has no shortage of enemies and challenges to face. Sending some Iron Manites could give Iron Man a huge advantage, staying ahead of your enemies using stealth, bringing back one of your best armor capabilities.
