Invincible is transformed into CGI format in the artwork. Based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Invincible is a Prime Video series that began in 2021. The series tells the story of Omni-Man, the most powerful superhero on the planet, and his son, Mark Grayson. The show features a talented cast of lead voices, including Steven Yeun, JK Simmons, Mark Hamill, Sandra Oh, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz and Walton Goggins. Invincible Season 3 is set to release on February 6, 2025.
Now Reddit art by @Matsky1 reimagines the core style of Invincible. Using the help of AI Midjourney tool, the artist posted recreations of several of the series' main characters in CGI art style. Featured characters include Omni-Man, Mark, Debbie, Cecil, William, Allen the Alien, Amber, and Eve. The CGI reimaginings of these characters are extremely detailed, showing wrinkles, freckles, and hair texture to a degree that the original series cannot. .
What this imagined style change means for Invincible
The art changes the emotions of the main characters
The IA transposition of these Invincible characters are not free from imperfections. For example, Cecil's 2D animated design in the original series includes lines above his upper lip that are intended to indicate a scar. In the Midjourney version of the character, his scar disappears completely and instead his face becomes textured with more wrinkles. If Invincible were actually made with CGI, the creators would of course keep important original details like this, but in this artistic version, some of the original intent is lost.
On the other hand, some other the intensity of the characters is amplified in the CGI version. The Nolan/Omni-Man CGI figure particularly highlights this change. Although its true 2D animation Invincible self appears somewhat distraught, his CGI counterpart's furrowed brow is considerably more displeased. Debbie's smiling expression also exudes a clearer happiness in the CGI version than in the painting on which it is based. Whether these versions actually bring improvements to the characters is a different question, but they certainly make a different impact.
Our opinion on Invincible's visual style
2D animation is the right choice for this series
Although it is interesting to imagine what Invincible may look like 3D models, I think this art is a testament to why Prime Video's adaptation works so well on a visual level. With Pixar, DreamWorks and so many other great animators opting for the CGI format for their films and series, Invincible offers a refreshing 2D animated version of its story. Partly due to the stellar vocal performances, not once did I feel that Invincible it loses the emotion of its animation style. Instead, its 2D presentation only adds to its ineffable charm, even amidst the bloody violence.
