While the 2015 Disney film From the inside out gave its main character Riley a simple combination of five emotions, Inside Out 2 gives Riley, now 13, new emotions to reflect the emotional shift that teenagers experience. In Inside Out 2Riley faces the challenging time of starting high school and maintaining her friendships while new emotions vie for control of her brain.
Inside Out 2 introduces several new emotions that can be seen as replacements for Riley’s emotions in the original film. Although all of Riley’s previous emotions still exist, Riley’s new emotions seek to take up space in her brain and trap their older counterparts in the back of Riley’s mind. The new primary emotions that change Riley are Anxiety, Embarrassment, Boredom, and Envy, which work to complicate Riley’s responses to events happening in her life. However, although four of the new emotions have similarities to the emotions introduced in from the inside out, there’s one in particular from the first film that doesn’t have a corresponding new emotion in it. Fear is the only emotion that is not replaced from the inside out 2
There is no emotion corresponding to Riley’s fear
Inside Out 2 gives Riley four new primary emotions to add to the original five, but none of them replace the effects of Fear. As the new emotions try to take over Riley’s new sense of self throughout the film, they contradict the decisions of her old emotions. This causes chaos in her mind and causes Riley’s personality to change drastically without her core emotions being in control.
Although Fear does not have a substitute in the same way that Joy, Anger, Sadness and Disgust do, Inside Out 2 briefly presents the appearance of the emotion Nostalgia. Nostalgia briefly appears in Riley’s brain control center and recalls all the emotions together, though she is quickly escorted back by Anxiety. Furthermore, the sensations created by Fear and Nostalgia are very different, meaning that Nostalgia is not necessarily meant to replace Fear.
How Inside Out 2 replaces the original emotions
Inside Out’s original emotions still appear, but they take a backseat to Riley’s new ones
All over Inside Out 2, Riley’s original emotions still surface, but they struggle to regain control over her brain. as she goes through puberty and tries new things. In this struggle for control, Joy, Sadness, Anger and Disgust are countered by Anxiety, Embarrassment, Boredom and Envy. Anxiety serves as a precursor to joy. Sadness and embarrassment want to help other emotions, but they don’t know how. Envy and disgust serve as perfect mirrors of each other. And despite their different primary states, Anger and Boredom change the way Riley behaves.
As Inside Out 2 progresses, all emotions must work together to help Riley succeed as she navigates adolescence.
