Notice! This post contains SPOILERS for episode 8 of The Penguin2024 The Penguin included one of the most brutal scenes in a DC Comics adaptation – all without a single death. Spinning off the 2022 Matt Reeves film Batman, The Penguin centers on Oswald Cobb as he murders and manipulates his way to the top of Gotham City's criminal element before the events of the next Batman – Part II. The series is gritty, psychological and violent – everything you'd expect in a series focused on a Batman villain – but one of its most brutal moments comes entirely from a harsh interrogation scene with no deaths.
Oswald “Oz” Cobb is presented as a new realistic interpretation of The Penguin in 2022 Batmanalthough he retains the essential characteristics of his comic counterpart. With Cobb and his characterization placed front and center The Penguinits complexities (and similarities to its comic counterpart) are further expanded upon, making it perhaps the darkest and most disturbing iteration of The Penguin yet. Naturally, the intense ending of The Penguin includes some of the most brutal moments of any live action Batman adaptation.
The Penguin Was DC's Most Brutal Live-Action Release Yet
HBO's Critically Acclaimed Show Made Matt Reeves' Gotham Even Darker
The Penguin delves into not only the twisted history of Oswald Cobb himself, but also that of Gotham's criminal element itself. Despite this, the series presents an incredibly naturalistic and, at times, seemingly pleasant version of The Penguin. Oswald Cobb appears to be an extremely insecure man and prone to violent and impulsive outbursts when his image or aspirations are ridiculed.. Cobb desires to become a respected crime boss like Rex Calabrese and the catalyst for The Penguin the main narrative comes from the murder of Alberto Falcone by Cobb - who makes the fatal mistake of laughing at this endeavor.
On the way to a dark finale that sees the end of Oz sidekick Victor Aguilar, The Penguin it also shows Oz taking revenge on the Maronis (led by Clancy Brown's crime boss Sal) by burning his wife and son to death. And in The penultimate episode shows that Cobb's worst tendencies began at a young age. Cobb's jealousy of his older and younger brothers—and unwillingness to share his mother's affection with them—led him to lock them in a sewer tunnel during a storm, leaving them to drown..
The dark moments keep coming until the series' most heartbreaking moment, when Cobb finally frees himself from his attachment - and potential vulnerability - to his loyal criminal protégé, Victor, by murdering him. But The Penguin went above and beyond that in the same episode, easily capturing DC's most difficult live-action moment during Sofia Gigante's (Cristin Milioti) interrogation of Oswald and Francis Cobb.
Sofia's Torture of Oz and Francis Was Incredibly Hard to Watch
Gotham's new crime queen took her revenge mission to her growth
In The Penguin In the finale, Sofia Gigante and Doctor Julian Rush kidnap Oswald and Francis Cobb, with the latter reliving memories of the days following the murder of Jack and Benny Cobb. Francis reveals that she discovered that Oswald killed his brothers and planned to have Rex Calabrese murder Oswald for it, but changed her mind when considering Calabrese's belief that Oswald's murderous tendencies could be useful to her. Sofia makes Francis reveal this to Oswald - along with her hatred for him - and tries to coerce Oswald into admitting that he murdered his brothers under threat of mutilating Francisco.
Oswald Disturbingly Won't Admit Killing Jack and Benny. He stubbornly sticks to his lies and is even willing to let Rush maim Francis rather than take responsibility for his actions. Interrogation destroys much of what Oswald holds dear. Cobb struggles to please his mother and win her affection, and discovers that she has hated him ever since he killed her brothers. Oswald wants to become a renowned crime boss like Rex Calabrese, only to discover that his idol almost murdered him. Without any deaths, this proves to be one of the The Penguin most uncomfortable moments.
Francis's breakdown was crueler than killing her or Oz
There are worse things than death in New Gotham
Sofia could have simply executed Francis and Oswald, but she preferred to torture the latter in the worst possible way. The Penguin shows that Oswald's idealized images of his future as the next Rex Calabrese and his relationship with his mother are invaluable to him, so Sofia attacks both ideas when she discovers what Oswald did to her brothers - and how her mother and Rex They almost killed him for it. What Sofia didn't foresee, however, is that Oswald values himself more than anything else and continues to selfishly defend his delusions in the final scenes of The Penguin.
