More than a year after the revival was canceled by Paramount+, iCarly star and executive producer Miranda Cosgrove teases a sequel to the series. Paramount confirmed it was not moving forward with iCarly Season 4 in October 2023, though the streamer praised the revival and cited the fact that fan-favorite couple Carly Shay (Cosgrove) and Freddie Benson (Nathan Cress) finally got together. Since then, however, Cosgrove has hinted that the popular young adult series may not be made forever.
During a recent appearance on The conversationaccording to DeadlineCosgrove offered an update that a sequel to iCarly is under construction. While the actor and producer couldn’t provide details, she hinted that the project would bring back fan favorite characters and resolve the cliffhanger that the revival ended in:
I’m not allowed to confirm anything 100% yet, but I think fans of the show will be super excited that we have something in the works.
We actually ended the revival on a cliffhanger and we’re going to wrap this up.
What an iCarly sequel means for the cliffhanger
It looks like the project is happening
iCarly season 3 ends with the tease of Carly’s mother finally being introduced. Although she isn’t shown on screen, it’s clear that her presence would be a major factor if season four were to happen. It now seems likely that Carly’s mother will be the focus of a iCarly film, which Cosgrove spoke about. It would also bring more clarity to Freddie and Carly, who ended the revival on somewhat shaky ground.
Also at the end of Season 3, Carly and Freddie realize they see different futures. Carly, in particular, isn’t sure she would ever want to get married. Although they are able to resolve this tension by having an open conversation, a movie sequel could tie a noose around the longtime pair.
Our Take on an iCarly Follow-up
It’s a nice story
It’s rare for a show to be brought back, even in movie form, after its cancellation is announced. However, this is not unheard of in programs like Veronica Marte and Futurama both moving forward after being canceled in multiple sequels. Given the probability that iCarly could be back, at least audiences would have a complete ending to the story that began in 2007.
