With From the world of John Wick: ballerina intends to expand the scope of John Wick universe, Ian McShane teases how Winston has ties to the past of the new assassin, played by Ana De Armas. McShane's Winston Scott is the owner and manager of the New York Continental Hotel, an establishment that offers the underworld a sanctuary from any rivals or occupational hazards, and a close ally of the franchise's main protagonist, played by Keanu Reeves. In the next BallerinaDe Armas' Eve Macarro sets out on a quest for revenge as she delves into the criminal underworld.
When speaking with Collider at CCXP, McShane revealed how Winston keeps several secrets about the mysterious past of De Armas' Eve Macarro this influences their dynamic in the spin-off film. McShane confirms that the two already knew each other before the events of Ballerinanot only knowing her parents, but having kept an eye on her throughout her upbringing as an assassin:
Well, I've met her before. Plus, I knew her mother and father, as we say. I know secrets about her that she will try to discover later. Obviously, I've kept an eye on her over the years since she was under the ballet tutelage of the character Anjelica Huston.
Despite this previous relationship, however, the actor jokes that because Winston has mysteries from his family's past, his allegiances and allegiances to Macarro are less clear and more ambiguous. Check out McShane's response below:
But Winston, you still don't know who he is, which is cool. He is the most enigmatic character.
What McShane Teases for Winston's Ballerina Role
The character's fate is already sealed
McShane is just one of several John Wick franchise alumni to reprise their role in Ballerina. Anjelica Huston reprises her role as Director of John Wick: 3 - Parabellumhaving adopted and mentored Wick from a young age and taken Macarro under his wing. Reeves is also expected to reprise his role as Wickand the late Lance Reddick will make his final theatrical appearance as Charon.
While McShane's teasing of his complicated ties to Macarro's past may suggest he is an antagonistic figure to her, the timeline of the John Wick universe guarantees your survival. Ballerina is defined between the events of John Wick: 3 Parabellum and John Wick 4with Winston temporarily regaining his position at the High Table. While the film may show how the High Table discovered Winston's betrayal, his survival is at least confirmed no matter how his bond with Macarro develops.
Our thoughts on Winston's ballerina role
The spin-off could shed new light on Winston
Its origin having been explored in The continental TV series and him acting as a somewhat ambiguous acquaintance in Ballerina, Winston is one of John Wick most explored characters in the franchise and a vital connective figure. As such, some may not be surprised by McShane's revelation that he has a significant role in the spin-off.
However, the actor's promise of Winston playing a more dubious role may intrigue viewers who only saw him as a reliable ally or main protagonist. Having Winston placed in a more dubious role in Ballerina will add greater depth to your character, and the perpetually gray morality of John Wick universe.
