THE Dragon Quest the series is having a bit of a resurgence thanks to the wonderful Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. It’s a complete remake of the wonderful DQ3 which promises fans classic JRPG gameplay with a modern twist. The many improvements made to this game have ensured that fans and newcomers alike can enjoy it, which is honestly fantastic to see. I’m so grateful that more people can experience its excellent storytelling and fun gameplay, as it’s one of the best games in the series.
However, while Dragon Quest 3 remake HD-2D absolutely deserves its incredibly positive reviews, I can’t help but feel like another game in the series deserved to be remade more. The first three Dragon Quest the games have had relatively decent ports to mobile devices and consoles, which has allowed a new group of fans to try them out. However, a Dragon Quest the game remains stuck on a single system despite being easily the best game in the entire series.
The best Dragon Quest game is Sentinels Of The Starry Skies
It’s a perfect RPG
THE Dragon Quest The series is one of the few in video game history that doesn’t have a truly terrible entry. Despite the plethora of attempts to diversify its gameplay, somehow Dragon Quest always manages to at least release something halfway decent. However, while they are all very good in their own right, in my opinion, the best Dragon Quest game is the ninth inning, Sentinels of the starry skies. I even think it surpasses the fantastic and universally loved Dragon Quest XI for the best Dragon Quest game of all time.
Of course, this probably has something to do with the fact that I played it when I was younger, but it’s still a game that, after multiple replays, holds up despite everything. From the incredible soundtrack to the memorable cast of characters, locations and narrative, Dragon Quest 9 it has everything. What makes it stand out from the rest is the inclusion of multiplayer modewhich frankly helped me beat the game the first time, as well as the fully customizable party members. I had so much fun forming my dream team of martial artists, gladiators, and priests.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that Dragon Quest 9 is one of the best DS games of all time, largely thanks to its enormous scale and ambition. It manages to cram an impressive overworld, ship navigation, a multitude of cities, multiplayer, dungeons, turn-based combat, lots of classes and an epic 90-hour story into Nintendo’s iconic handheld. I often find myself coming back to playat the very least, those first few hours in Angel Falls and Bloomingdale, but, on many occasions, the whole adventure.
It’s a truly fascinating JRPG, one of the best JRPGs of all time, in fact, with witty writing, some genuinely touching moments, and plenty of twists. While JRPGs have come a long way in terms of storytelling, Dragon Quest 9 never feels old-fashioned or overly simple. There are flying trains, angels and demons, a private school called Swinedimples Academy with missing students, and much more. It manages to balance humor, horror, and emotional moments perfectly in a way that the best JRPGs often fail to accomplish.
Dragon Quest 9 deserves a remake
It would be beneficial with online functionality
I’ve often thought about how a remake of Dragon Quest 9 would work, but it never seemed possible. Part of the game’s charm is its aerial perspective, mix of 2D sprites and 3D models, and colorful visuals, something I wouldn’t want to see sacrificed in a remake. However, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake showed how it is possible to keep the original art style intact while also improving it for the modern era. Dragon Quest 9 wouldn’t need to change drastically in terms of its artistic stylebut it would benefit from several modern improvements.
Dragon Quest 9 It wasn’t a hidden gem by any means, but the fact that it remained stuck on the Nintendo DS meant that a lot of people still hadn’t had the chance to try it out.
Firstly, unlike the Dragon Quest 3 2D-HD Remake, Dragon Quest 9 it wouldn’t need new story content. Your story is pretty perfect and I can’t imagine how it could be improved. It’s pretty trippy in some places, but it’s always been Dragon Quest thing. It’s a tropey JRPG series, but DQ9 manages to subvert this in several ways, like with its crazier sequences in the aforementioned Swinedimples Academy, or the fact that the Celestrians drive a golden train called the Starflight Express.
However, an area in which Dragon Quest 9 would benefit from a remake is its multiplayer. Dragon Quest 9 It was revolutionary for being the first game in the series to include multiplayer. It was possible to form groups of up to four players and complete the entire story together. I remember playing pirates with my brother as we sailed the high seas before we pretended to be students in Swinedimples. There were so many looks available that all of this and more was possible. The multiplayer was great, but without an online mode it was difficult to get a full party going.
A remake could fix this and allow players from all over the world to adventure together. While fans wait for the long-awaited Dragon Quest door, a remake of Dragon Quest 9 would fill that multiplayer void. There are many other quality of life improvements that the game could benefit from, but largely a remake would bring it to a much wider audience. Dragon Quest 9 It wasn’t a hidden gem by any means, but the fact that it remained stuck on the Nintendo DS meant that a lot of people still hadn’t had the chance to try it out.
It would be great to see the DQ9 on modern hardware
It needs to be saved on the DS
While most others Dragon Quest games have been ported to modern consoles or mobile devices, Dragon Quest 9 remains stuck on the Nintendo DS. The only way to play now is to buy a used DS and find a copy of the game on eBay. I still have a DS and my original copy of DQ9but I can imagine that a lot of people sold their DS or never had one. Although they are quite cheap nowadays, it seems a shame that the best DQ the game is locked to old hardware.
Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels of the Starry Sky is a masterclass in JRPG design and should absolutely be treated with the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake treatment.
Bringing Dragon Quest 9 for modern consoles it seems like a must, especially when video game preservation is becoming increasingly important. I also feel strongly that more people should have the opportunity to play this gameand outside of op-eds like this one or YouTube video essays, there are few ways to find out about it if you don’t already know it exists. However, if it was at least ported to modern hardware, Square Enix would be forced to market it and more people would be able to play it.
Of course, porting a DS game to modern consoles can be tricky, especially since they often make good use of both screens. However, Dragon Quest 9 used the top screen only as a local map or to display the enemy while players chose which attack to use on the bottom screen. It’s not unlikely to imagine them being easily repositioned on a single screen, such as having the map as a minimap or accessible through a menu.
There are many JRPGs that deserve a remaster or remake, but I firmly believe that Dragon Quest 9 should be at the top of the waiting list. It’s stuck on old hardware and badly needs online functionality to make its multiplayer mode more accessible. It’s a truly phenomenal title, which, with a little redesign, could continue to be the best game in the entire series. Dragon Quest series. Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels of the Starry Sky is a masterclass in JRPG design and should absolutely be treated with the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake treatment.
