“I don’t need to see a film that says the word ‘spice’ in such a dramatic way”

Quentin Tarantino revealed why he refuses to watch Denis Villeneuve Dune films. Tarantino has been a celebrated director since the release of his first feature film, Reservoir Dogsin 1992. Since then, Tarantino has directed several acclaimed films, such as pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterdsand Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Tarantino has also earned a reputation as a great movie buff, which is why It’s surprising he hasn’t seen Villeneuve’s film Dune filmswhich were two of the most critically acclaimed films of recent years.

Appearing in Bret Easton Ellis Podcast (through Reel World), Tarantino joked that he hasn’t seen the new Dune movies because you don’t want to see a movie that uses the word “spice” so dramatically. However, in fact, there’s a much deeper reason why he didn’t watch Villeneuve’s film Dune filmswhich speaks to the current state of Hollywood. Read Tarantino’s full quote below:

I saw [David Lynch’s] Dune a few times. I don’t need to see this story again. I don’t need to see spice worms. I don’t need to see a movie that says the word “Spice” so dramatically.

It’s one after the other of this remake, and that remake. People ask ‘have you seen Dune?’ — Have you seen Ripley? ‘Have you seen the Shogun?’ And I say ‘no, no, no, no’. There are six or seven Ripley books, if you do one again, why are you doing the same thing they’ve already done twice? I’ve seen this story twice before and didn’t really like it in either version, so I’m not really interested in seeing it a third time. If you did another story, it would be interesting enough to try anyway.

Tarantino didn’t watch Dune because Hollywood remakes too many films

Three different versions of Dune have been released in the last 40 years

Since Tarantino watched David Lynch’s film Dune film, released in 1984, several times, he has no desire to watch Villeneuve’s latest film Dune films. That’s nothing against Villeneuve, who has become one of the world’s most acclaimed directors in recent years. Instead, Tarantino is actually criticizing the projects that major Hollywood studios are deciding to finance. In addition to DuneTarantino also highlights two series that were released this year, Ripley and Shogunwhich he also has no interest in because they are remakes.

Tarantino’s reasons for not watching Villeneuve Dune the films connect to one of the most common critiques of Hollywood today. Many filmmakers, writers and fans point out that Hollywood studios no longer come up with intriguing original storiesand instead rely on remakes of classic films or adaptations to attract people to theaters. As a filmmaker who has primarily written original films, it’s understandable that Tarantino is frustrated with the current state of Hollywood.

As mentioned, Tarantino is actually highlighting an important issue about the current state of Hollywood. It is a fact that the big studios only focus on reinterpreting classics. However, within the world of just remakes and big-name IPs getting greenlit, there are some examples of truly exceptional work. In the case of Villeneuve Dune films, both are extraordinary cinematic achievements and are a prime example of a filmmaker operating at the highest level to provide fans with a series of science fiction films that will be talked about for years to come.
