Jim Carrey detailed the challenges of playing Ivo and Gerald Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3alongside what makes their characters so different. The actor returned to play the central villain in the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 3where he will join Gerald and Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) on a world-conquering mission. The older Robotnik's introduction shows Carrey playing both roles, though it's unclear how different the grandson and grandfather will be.
Talking to TelaRantCarrey explained how “Gerald is a generation a little tougher than Ivo“, a fundamental difference between the two characters in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Comparing his dual roles to those of Eddie Murphy The crazy teacher, he explained how actor Brendan Murphy was his stand-in during production, the pair alternating between their roles while playing different scenes. They had to coordinate so that Carrey could accurately portray his other character in different scenarios, sometimes with audio of him playing one Robotnik while portraying another. Check out what Carrey said below:
It's a very technically difficult thing to do. First of all, you need to start with personalities. You have to start with the fact that Gerald is a little bit tougher than Ivo, and Ivo gets all clingy when he finds out he has a grandfather. And Gerald is the rock he came from. But they are a little different in their goals. They are a little different and we found out why.
The physical act of acting in the same scene as yourself, I don't know how Eddie did it, because it was really incredible. It was very difficult, and I had a wonderful actor called Brendan Murphy come in with me and play the other role. So, I would play Robotnik and he would play Gerald, and I would play Gerald and he would play Robotnik, and I would be sitting there as Robotnik acting and telling him how I could eventually do this side of the character. And then when I was that side of the character, I would be reminding him of how maybe I played that side of the character. So, it was very difficult technically. Many times I was acting with him, but I was reacting to a disembodied voice I had done the day before coming from somewhere in the ceiling. So, it's a trick. Acting nowadays requires a lot of imagination and a lot of pantomime.
What Carrey's statement says about his dual roles in Sonic The Hedgehog 3
Ivo and Gerald will not feel like the same character
Carrey's comment indicates that there will be some fundamental differences between Ivo and Gerald, something that will be fully revealed as the story of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 unfolds. The older Robotnik appears to be seeking revenge alongside Shadow, something he later recruits his grandson for when revealing he is still alive. It seems that whatever plans he has will depend on the two of them working together, but differences in character won't always mean they see eye to eye. Just how different they are won't be fully revealed until the film's release.
As for Carrey's performance, its details are reminiscent of Murphy's The crazy teacherwhere he played seven different characters, many of whom played themselves in several scenes. Using workarounds, such as having another actor present and hearing the dialogue over a loudspeaker, seemed to help make the character interactions feel more natural, even though they were coming from the same actor. As Gerald Robotnik's character will include some important differences from his grandson, the two roles will likely look different despite coming from one person.
Our take on how Carrey portrayed the two Robotniks in Sonic The Hedgehog 3
His statement brings a lot of depth to both performances.
Carrey's statement shows how dedicated he is to bringing the two villainous doctors to life, potentially with important differences between the two. Although Gerald's characterization has yet to be fully explored, we believe there will be some important contrasts for the grandfather and grandson duo that will prevent them from feeling like the same person. With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 just a week from now, it won't be long before these differences and the hard work put into the star's portrayals become evident on the big screen.
