Harry Styles just had his second Wonder appearance in three years, and his cameo was wasted both times. The British singer is no stranger to acting, having had a starring role in Don't worry, dear and a supporting role Dunkirk. However, it was still a huge surprise when Styles landed a role in the MCU. Making his official MCU debut in 2021 during the Eternals mid-credits scene, he was introduced as the Eternal Eros, aka Starfox and brother of Thanos.
In fact, I was excited to see how Marvel would utilize Styles' character in the future. It would have been an expansion of Thanos' character even after his death, and it would have been a chance for Styles to show off more of his serious acting skills. Unfortunately, he has been missing from the MCU since his initial introduction. He technically made another Marvel cameo recently in Kraven the Hunterbut it was another missed opportunity, as Styles didn't actually appear in the film. This results in two films where Marvel wasted Styles' cameos in just three years.
The Eternals' Harry Styles Cameo Still Isn't Worth It in 2024
Eros has not been mentioned since 2021
It's been three years since Styles' first official cameo in the MCUand I'm surprised it hasn't paid off yet, considering its popularity on the music scene. He was clearly being prepared for another future appearance, given the way the Eternals the mid-credits scene unfolded. Fans were debating whether it would be in Eternals sequel or another separate MCU project, but neither appears to be the case right now.
A big reason why Styles didn't return is probably because of the reception from fans of Eternals. The project took a slightly different cinematic approach than most other superhero blockbusters, and it was also a film filled with completely new characters. Many fans either didn't care about the movie or didn't even bother to watch itso I can understand why Marvel wouldn't want to put the effort into creating a sequel. Regardless, it's still disappointing to know that so many characters, including Styles' Eros, will be left hanging.
Kraven the Hunter brought Harry Styles into his story in a different way
His voice actually played a key role in the film
Styles can technically say he was part of another Marvel project this year. Kraven the Hunter is the latest release from Sony Spider-Man universe and probably the last one too. Even though the film was a box office flop with poor reviews, it can at least boast that it worked in a hidden cameo from Styles. To show your ability to imitate other people's voices the film has Dmitri Kravinoff singing Styles' song “Sign of the Times.” Fred Hechinger lip-synced to Styles' singing to make his imitated voice as believable as possible.
Eagle-eyed fans of the singer were able to deduce that the audio used in the film was actually Styles' performance of “Sign of the Times” by The Graham Norton Show in 2017. While this was a clever way to execute the Chameleon's mime effect, it's a shame the studio couldn't get Styles to record specific audio for the film. Of course, this would only be viable in an ideal world where Styles had time to make such a small cameo, but I can't help but feel like Marvel missed the chance to use him once again.
The MCU Still Has a Chance to Redeem Its Wasteful Harry Styles Cameo
The Eternals sequel could still happen
MCU characters obviously don't appear in every project, and it's normal not to hear about some for a few years. However, there hasn't been much news from Marvel Studios about a Eternals sequence since the first film premiered, and that makes me a little more pessimistic about it actually happening. When the studio announced its slowdown, there was also talk of cutting projects that weren't guaranteed success. With the way the film was received, Eternals the sequel was likely one of the projects released.
There is still hope for a Eternals sequel, as 2024 was a much more successful year for Marvel in terms of box office numbers and critical acclaim. The slowdown really worked for the studio this year and they seemed to figure out how to take risks with their projects while still achieving success. Since a Eternals the sequel was never fully wrapped up, I think it's safe to hope that it will happen. Styles' Eros would undoubtedly play a big role in a sequel, and I really hope the MCU decides to finally pay for his cameo in 2021.
