What happened in Hunter x Hunter Chapter #408?

Morena’s tragedy and a sudden development

The chapter begins with Borksen choosing the objective card and Morena explaining to her that her objective was to destroy Kakin and then kill all humans. Confused, Borksen asks her to expand and this is where Morena explains how evil Kakin is. Every few years, the royal family would secretly travel to a remote village for a banquet, and the villagers would be divided into “artists” and “others.” Morena’s mother was an artist and died after “working” non-stop for the royal family. Furthermore, she didn’t even know that at that time she gave birth and had a daughter.

Morena further revealed that she was taken to an orphanage run by the Hei-ly family, where she was categorized as “meat” and endured that role for 20 horrible years. During this time, she developed a Nen ability and managed to kill and replace the real Morena Prudo, who was a “Second-Track Faker”, the illegitimate daughter of a king, before rising through Hei-ly’s ranks to become its boss. Borksen then selects the Power card. Morena thus explains her ability, which allows her to grant Nen to 22 different people, who can then develop it as long as they reach a specific target by killing other people.

After some further explanation about Nen and how Borksen fits into Morena’s goals, Borksen chooses the Yes card and then selects the No card from Morena’s pile. Morena explains the consequences if Borksen’s last card is No: she would be killed and her points would be used to increase Morena’s skill. Morena also clarifies that if the “X” was the last card, Borksen would leave the game and the room unharmed, with Morena honoring her promise to forget they ever met. Finally, Borksen is left with two cards: Return and No. When they are about to continue the game, they are interrupted by a loudspeaker announcement informing them that the Black Whale is now under martial law.

The truth about Kakin and Morena is finally revealed

The new superpower is more rotten than fans thought

A series of Hunter x Hunter characters in fine clothing wave goodbye and smile.

Although it has always been known that there was a dark side to the Kakin Empire and how they rose to the top, no one could have expected the royal family to be so evil. Furthermore, fans now understand why Morena wants to destroy the world and the nation. Furthermore, after discovering that these carnivals still existed after Kakin’s democratization, Borksen is also shaken in her beliefs. Morena is a deeply sympathetic character now, and there’s more to come from her as the series progresses.

Benjamin and Balsamilco talking

An interesting recent development is that martial law was finally enacted, probably by Benjamin. While Luzurus’ death may have contributed to this decision, other events could have provided him with justification to impose strict legal measures, such as Chrollo’s theft of national treasures. The next chapter of Hunter x Hunter will probably focus on this situation and stay away from Morena’s card game.
