Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine got a canon rematch with Sabretooth long before his Deadpool and Wolverine cameo

Logan’s story in the first X-Men The film ends with him leaving the X-Mansion for Alkali Lake, and his story in the second begins with him arriving at the location. Although this is a pretty direct continuation, Wolverine actually went on a whole mission in between – a mission with none other than Sabretooth.

As Wolverine is riding Cyclops’ motorcycle to Alkali Lake, he is ambushed by Sabretooth. Victor Creed tracks Logan to a gas station, and when Wolverine stops to fill up, Sabretooth launches his attack. After expressing shock at the fact that Sabretooth was actually alive after his defeat at the Statue of Liberty, the two mutant rivals fought viciously, ending with Wolverine dousing them both in gasoline and lighting his lighter, burning himself and Sabretooth alive.

After their fight, Wolverine and Sabretooth begin to realize that they are both looking for the same thing: answers about their past – which the two actually share. Unknown to them at the time, both Wolverine and Sabretooth are Weapon X operatives, and once they come to this realization, they decide to team up to find out about their past. Unfortunately, Sabretooth was abducted and killed by Weapon X (after Victor saved Logan’s life by helping him escape from Weapon X’s grasp at the end of the comic), bringing an abrupt and tragic end to their movie-universe partnership.

When you know that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Tyler Mane’s Sabretooth had a rematch before the events of Deadpool & Wolverine It’s unbelievably pointless, what’s even cooler is that Sabertown didn’t just come back as a villain, but that he actually found redemption. When fans see Sabretooth in Deadpool & WolverineHe’s still very much the same evil bartender he was in the 2000s X-Men. However, the comic confirms that there was much more to him than movie fans knew, adding a level of depth to an otherwise fairly two-dimensional comic book movie villain, and bringing his story to a fantastic close.

Now, when fans go back and watch Deadpool & WolverineThey’ll know that while Sabretooth’s original live comeback is awesome, it’s not Taylor Mane’s first. Sabretooth and Hugh Jackman S Wolverine have fought since their iconic battle in the first X-Men film, as they got a movie-canon rematch in Marvel Comics long before.
