During Act II Returned story missions in Destiny 2you must fill in the “Captive Memories” search for progress. Although it is a shorter quest, you need to defeat a powerful and familiar enemy from the past to advance in the search for the character Fikrul. With a complex puzzle also in your way, it can be easy to get stuck at different points during this mission.
THE Returned episode in Destiny 2 brings new mechanics and story content for you to explore, including missions like “Captive Memories.” Completing this quest can reward you with unique items, but you may need to farm them multiple times to get what you want. Fortunately, this quest is much shorter than previous seasonal raids for other DLC, so you’ll be able to farm it without any problems using moderate builds.
Door Puzzle Solution
Follow the right sequence
When you start “Captive Memories” its initial objective is Escape from Lockup by entering a prison through a decompression chamber. This happens after you talk to Variks as you pass through a small cave that leads to a large room with dim purple lighting. This area has a huge machine in the center, as well as several terminals marked with strange Fallen symbols that make up the area’s puzzle.
The doors in front of each terminal are electrically locked, preventing you from escaping the room. When jumping, you can see various symbols on the floor in front of the machine in a specific order. You need interact with each terminal in the same order to disable the electricity in the doors and allow your character to escape.
Whenever you interact with the correct terminal in the sequence, you will receive a message saying “The anthem resounds throughout the chamber.” Activating the wrong terminal will give you “The anthem disappears” rather, as a message. Interact with the doors in the following order to solve the puzzle:
- Front door – directly behind the symbols on the floor
- Right Door – from the symbols
- Right Door
- Left Door – to the left of the symbols
- Back door – in front of the machine behind the symbols
Once the puzzle is complete, go through the back door and follow your quest marker to continue the quest. The next sections of “Captive Memories” are combat encounters that introduce a new feature into Destiny 2 named “Devouring Essence.” Similar to attacks, you’ll want to learn what this mechanic does before getting into a fight.
How to beat the abomination boss
Destroy the barrier that protects your enemy
Following the path out of the puzzle room will lead you to a combat encounter against The Abomination, another mini-boss in this mission. “Devouring Essence” is applied to your character the moment this begins, killing you instantly after 43 seconds. There are ways to cancel or reset this timer, but not in the way you might think.
The Abomination, also known as Returned Baron, is immune to all damage when you start the fight. However, you can disable the mini-boss’s immunity by defeating his three High Revenant Elite enemies spread across the boss arena. Destroying the Abomination’s protection immediately makes it vulnerable, allowing you to quickly kill it with a volley of your best weapons.
Kill a High Revenant while protecting the Abomination reset the timer on “Devouring Essence” debuffgiving you more time to pull out another and reset the timer again.
Advancing from the Abomination will take you further into the caves beneath the first Lockup area. From here, you’ll have to fight a few more enemies along the way, including another Subjugator mini-boss. Keep following your quest marker and claim any loot you can get from these encounters, as you might get lucky with a seasonal exotic in Destiny 2.
How to beat Skolas
Defeat a reborn opponent
The final arena you arrive at during the “Captive Memories” mission will see the resurrection of Skolas, the Fallen Kell of Destinationof House of Wolves expansion in 2015. This former boss returned with a vengeance, seeking to once again eliminate his Guardian with renewed aggression. Skolas is very healthymaking them a harder enemy to take down than the Abomination.
Skolas’ fight also features two small attack-like mechanics. You are not allowed to freely reappear against Skolaslimiting how reckless you can be during the encounter. Additionally, Skolas will attempt to activate devices called Splinter Mines throughout the arena. If Skolas manages to detonate a Splinter Mine, the whole place explodes, automatically eliminating you and forcing you to restart the fight.
Some of the best strategies to combat Skolas include:
- Stand under shattered mines to deactivate them
- Defeat Skolas’ minions quickly
- Continue dealing damage to Skolas whenever possible
Standing in the large white circular spaces beneath Splinter Mines will eventually disable them. Skolas will try to detonate one when he reaches about 60% health, so be sure to focus on that quickly while continuing to press Fallen Kell. When Skolas reach about half health, they will become immune to all damage and apply the “Devouring Essence” debuff for you the same way The Abomination did.
The solution here is the same as the fight against the Abomination, as you need to destroy the High Revenants in the arena to disable Skolas’ immunity barrier. Defeating High Revenants will reset your debuff timer, which still lasts 43 seconds before you die instantly. Once Skolas’ immortality is deactivated, they will attempt to activate another Splinter Mine at around 10% health, which can be disarmed via the previous method.
Keep pressing Skolas throughout this fight to destroy the boss’s massive health bar. As long as you prevent the minions from hurting you, disable Splinter Mines, and eliminate High Revenants quickly, you should have no problem winning this battle. A brief dialogue between Variks and Mithrax will end the “Captive Memories” mission in Destiny 2allowing you to continue the plot of Episode: Revenant Act 2.
