Cliff, one of Team Rocket’s leaders, returns to Pokemon GO in November 2024 with a team of Shadow Pokémon that you can beat for exclusive rewards. Cliff’s team is familiar to those who have challenged him and other Team Rocket captains. However, with more Pokémon being added to the game in recent updates, there are new ways to make this fight easier to win.
Unlike the new Gigantamax battles in Pokemon GOCliff is one of the trainer battles that you can unlock by meeting different requirements. You have to defeat six different Team Rocket Grunts to collect parts of a mysterious component device. Once you have all the necessary parts, build the Rocket Radar and travel to a Team Rocket Balloon to encounter Leaders Cliff, Sierra or Arlo in battle.
Cliff Lineup and Counters (November 2024)
Understand which Pokémon can be used
Like any of Team Rocket’s leaders, Cliff’s battle is divided into three waves. Similar to Sierra or Arlo in Pokemon GOCliff uses Shadow Pokémon, which are stronger variants of the pocket monsters you may already know. Cliff only has one Pokémon he can use during the first wave, but the second and third phases of his battles could have some different possibilities.
Each of Cliff’s second or third Pokémon could be one of three options which are determined randomly. This can make it difficult to form a team of your own that perfectly counters everything Cliff can throw at you. To fully prepare for this fight, use the table below to identify which Pokémon Cliff could use and which ones you can have on your side to exploit Team Rocket Leader’s weaknesses:

The variety of different types that Cliff uses with various Pokémon may seem foolproof, but you can create a team that exploits some vulnerable points. You must have a team made up of:
- A Fighting-type DPS
- A water type tank
- A Steel, Electric, or Ice-type wild card
The Fighting-type you bring can demolish Cliff’s Dark-types like Galarian Zigzagoon, Obstagoon, and even the powerful Tyranitar by exploiting its typing’s weakness. A beefy Water-type can absorb hits from any Pokémon at Cliff’s disposal, while also attacking Marowack and Aerodactyl’s vulnerabilities. To deal with Venasaur and Crobat, a Steel or Ice type that can get a same-type attack bonus (STAB) from its attacks can ensure your victory.
Rewards for beating the cliff (November 2024)
Earn new Pokémon and rare items
The greatest reward of defeating Cliff, or any Team Rocket Leader, is the opportunity to catch one of the Shadow Pokémon used by the enemy trainer. In Cliff’s case, you can try to catch your Galarian Zigzagoonwhich could eventually evolve into the Obstagoon seen in later waves of the Leader’s battle.
Similar to other wild Pokémon encounters, you can find a Shiny variant in Pokemon GO of Cliff’s exclusive Galarian Zigzagoon. There’s only a 1 in 64 chance of this happening, so you may have to defeat Cliff multiple times to find a Shiny.
Some other rewards you can get for beating all of Cliff’s team waves are:
-
1,000 Stardust
-
4x Revive
-
2x Max Revive
-
4x Hyper Potion
-
2x Maximum Potion
-
1x Unova Stone
-
1x 12km Strange Egg
You You will always get the Strange Egg if there is an available Egg slot in your inventoryas well as Stardust. However, you receive only two other packages of the items listedwhich are determined randomly after you win. Anyone who can defeat Cliff in November 2024 may want to get these items to challenge the difficult Gigantamax attacks for even more rewards in Pokemon GO.
