How The Mandalorian's Success Doomed Boba Fett (Even Before His Failed TV Show)

Boba Fett spin-off TV show, The Book of Boba FettIt was an infamous disappointment for many Star Wars viewers, but this failure actually started with The MandalorianIt's a huge success. Boba Fett became a fan-favorite character even before his film debut in The Empire Strikes Backwith its official debut in The Star Wars Holiday Special and the release of his first official action figure in 1979. He was unlike any other character seen in Star Wars at that point, and his Mandalorian armor led to the creation of an entire planet and a group of renowned warriors.

Thus, it was Boba Fett who paved the way for all Mandalorians, including Din Djarin. The titular character of The Mandalorian has since become the most famous Mandalorian in the world Star Wars franchise, as that term alone makes most people, even those outside the Star Wars fandom, think of Din Djarin's silver helmet and his adorable green companion. Without Boba Fett, this wouldn't have been possible, but it came at a cost for the galaxy's most famous bounty hunter. The huge success Star Wars had with Din Djarin stunted Boba's own story.

Din Djarin fits the Boba Fett mold perfectly

An iconic silhouette, a bounty hunter reputation, and more

Since Din Djarin couldn't have been created without Boba Fett, he became a new iteration of the character - and, in many ways, led to the story that many had imagined for Boba himself. While Boba Fett received a detailed story treatment in the Star Wars Continuity of the legends, these tales were made non-canon in 2014, and their story became a blank slate once again. Even so, Much of Boba's story happened in novels and comics rather than on screen, and Din Djarin's story came before him in the more recent Disney canon.

As Boba Fett, Din Djarin's silhouette became essential to his character, with the famous Mandalorian mask and Western nods of his tattered cape, Amban phase pulse blaster rifle, and more. Din, of course, was also known as the "better [bounty hunter] in parsec", a title Boba certainly had before his supposed death in the Sarlacc pit. Din's story even began adapting elements of Boba's story in Legendsincluding the diaspora element of the Mandalorians themselves. Ultimately, Din Djarin ended up becoming who many thought Boba Fett was.

Star Wars couldn't figure out what to do with Boba Fett

There wasn't really a solid plan for the character

With Din Djarin essentially taking on the role of Boba Fett in the modern Star Warsthe franchise didn't really know what to do with the real Boba Fett upon his return. Your role in The Mandalorian Season 2 hit a sweet spot, with him confronting Din Djarin to reclaim his original armor before creating an alliance with the honorable Mandalorian to help rescue Grogu from Moff Gideon. Afterwards, however, there was no solid place for Boba's story to go. Din had the Darksaber and therefore the right to rule Mandalore, like Boba did in Legends, so that wasn't an option.

Despite that, Star Wars still intended to capitalize on the excitement surrounding Boba Fett's return by promising his spin-off series, The Book of Boba Fettduring a post-credits scene in The Mandalorian season 2 finale. The unfortunate thing is that there was no clear plan for Boba's story; Since Din Djarin was essentially doing what Boba would have done, or did in Legends, there weren't many familiar options for Boba's story.. As a result, Boba was ultimately given a story that wasn't true to his character and disappointed for the most part. Star Wars public.

Star Wars shouldn't have brought Boba Fett back without a better plan

He deserved a more complete history treatment

A helmeted Boba Fett in The Book of Boba Fett, Season 1, Episode 3

Although not Star Wars fan would deny Boba Fett's return in The Mandalorian is still one of the franchise's best moments so far, they really should have waited until they had a better plan for the character. Rushing into the Boba spin-off show gave them little time to chart a new path that hadn't yet been taken by Din Djarinand it took them to a place that wasn't true enough to who Boba is as a character. To make matters worse, Din Djarin took over half of Boba's story himself in that same spin-off.

This is now out Star Wars in a difficult situation, as far as Boba's story is concerned. They've clearly been afraid to touch the character ever since The Book of Boba Fett completed in 2022, as the character didn't even appear in The Mandalorian third season, but something needs to be done for such a classic, fan-favorite character. Temuera Morrison also deserves another chance to return as Boba as there is no doubt he is fantastic in the role. Hopefully, Star Wars can solve this problem that your success with The Mandalorian accidentally created to bring Boba back.
