As the oldest member of the iconic ensemble, many fans wonder how old Samantha is Sex and the city. Sex and the city premiered on HBO in June 1998 and ran for six seasons, following Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) and Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall). After the series finale in 2004, the franchise expanded to include two feature films before the franchise returned, … Is that so in 2021. However, Samantha has only appeared in a single cameo on the show so far.
Sex and the city was groundbreaking in portraying successful, independent female characters who were not afraid or ashamed to talk about sex. Samantha was pragmatic, sometimes vulgar and inappropriate, but unflinchingly honest. And without the abundance of episodic male suitors and explicit scenes, there would have been much less “sex” in the film. Sex and the city. Most importantly, Samantha refused to conform to traditional gender roles and was content to forgo marriage and motherhood, and shows no regrets about this as she grows older.
Samantha was 40 at the start of Sex And The City
Her age is a carefully guarded secret for most of the series
At the beginning of the series, Samantha is much more cautious about her age than the other women because she is a little older than her friends.. However, there are signs of its age. During Season 2 Episode 3, ‘The Freak Show,’ Samantha is deeply offended when a man she is dating guesses her age to be 40 or 41. As the narrator, Carrie reveals that women have been celebrating Samantha’s 35th birthday since that I can remember.
Samantha finally recognizes the age difference in Sex and the city timeline during season 3, episode 8, when she believes she is going through menopause and confesses to her friends, “Ladies… What I’m about to tell you… may come as a shock. I’m a little… older than you.” During Season 4, Episode 1, Carrie regrets turning 35 and Samantha responds: “Oh, shut up, I’m 140 years old.”
Over the years, the women have dissected the ups and downs of aging, with the other main characters closing the gap between 35 and 40. However, Samantha’s age remains a mystery until Season 6 Episode 12, which was on aired in September 2003. While discussing Carrie’s love interest Aleksandr Petrovsky, Samantha remembers him as the “it” guy during Studio 54’s heyday when she was 22. Samantha will reveal to Miranda and Carrie that she is 45 years old, turning 40 when the series premiered. His birthday was later confirmed as April 28, 1958.
Samantha turns 50 in the film Sex And The City
Her birthday is the final scene of the film
Four years after the series ended, the four women returned for the first of two films, simply titled Sex and the city. The film picks up the story four years later, as they continue to navigate life in New York – or in Samantha’s case, Los Angeles. At the time of the film, Samantha has moved to Los Angeles to better manage Smith’s career, but is increasingly bored and unhappy with their life there.
She repeatedly visits New York throughout the film, to spend time with friends and to attend Carrie’s tragic wedding, which is the centerpiece of the plot. At the end of the film, Samantha has decided that she “loves me more” – or that she will have to go back to New York and end the relationship to be truly happy.
Samantha has decided that she “loves me more” – or that she will have to go back to New York and end her relationship to be truly happy.
Her age is not a major part of the plot, as her story focuses on her losing herself in a relationship and then finding herself again in independence. However, her age appears in the final scene, which is her 50th birthday party. The four women go out to celebrate with her, drinking cosmos, and Carrie’s narration talks about a new stage in life.
Samantha is 52 years old in Sex And The City 2
The second film addresses menopause
Sex and the City 2, the following film did not achieve the same success as Sex and the cityand was heavily criticized for the way Samantha changed in the film. Sex and the City 2 sees the four women traveling on an all-expenses-paid luxury vacation to Abu Dhabi, thanks to Samantha’s work. This should have been a great way to show that Samantha continued to thrive as a single woman in her 50s. However, the film showed her as a narrow-minded, sex-obsessed woman and made her menopause experience a degrading comic point.
In the film, Samantha is 52 years old and is going through menopauseincluding extreme heat waves. She is taking a series of herbal supplements in the US to help mitigate symptoms, but these are confiscated at the border during her travels, so she struggles with symptoms while traveling.
This eventually leads her to lose her temper and storm out in public, removing layers of clothing and causing a serious incident. It was a particularly negative portrayal of both the character and women of that age and was probably a big reason why Kim Cattrall decided not to reprise the character for Is that so.
Samantha is 63 years old at the beginning and just like that
She is in her 60s for her cameo
When Is that so was announced, one of the biggest surprises was that Samantha Jones would not be part of the series. Cattrall has publicly washed her hands of the franchise due to a high-profile feud with Parker, as well as issues with the character’s evolution. Is that so in fact, it addressed Samantha’s absence. In the series, it is explained in a conversation between Carrie and Miranda that Samantha and Carrie had a falling out and had not spoken to each other for years after Samantha moved to London.
Since Is that so aired, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall had a lot to say about Samantha’s absence. Parker took to The Hollywood ReporterPrize Chatter Podcast to explain Samantha not being in Sex and the city revival, while Cattrall revealed that she had previously stated that she had no interest in appearing as Samantha after the Sex and the City 2 film in 2010, and wouldn’t return for a third film if that happened. She also revealed that she wasn’t even invited to be part of the series (via Variety).
“I was never asked to be a part of the reboot. I made my feelings clear after the possible third film, then I found out about it like everyone else did — on social media.”
However, things have clearly changed since then, as Cattrall had a surprise cameo in Season 2 of the show where she talks to Carrie. In Season 1, she is mentioned and later sends flowers for Big’s funeral, while in Season 2 she and Carrie are texting and have a brief phone call. It’s not much, but it’s possible there are more cameos to come. Of course, with such a small role to play in this new series, Samantha’s life and age are not mentioned, but at this moment she is in her sixties.
Why Samantha will always be timeless, no matter her age
Samatha would still be a fun and insightful character decades later
While the Sex and the city The franchise has seen Samantha age in different ways over the years, her unique kindness is much more important than her age. When Sex and the city first aired, there were few women on television who spoke as openly about their sexuality and their sex life as Samantha did. Although this was a big part of the show, Samantha still stood out among the other characters for her boldness.
As much of a groundbreaking character as Samantha Jones was when the show aired, she maintained a timeless quality that made her age even less important. In truth, the older she got in the franchise, the more interesting it was to see her continue to live so openly while her confidence in her sexuality only became more endearing.
There have been moments on the show, especially in Samantha’s various relationships in Sex and the city with younger men, in whom she is ashamed of her age. However, this is another way in which the character was so effective. She could represent the concerns of many women of a certain age and feel grounded, while also providing an inspiring figure of strength in the face of such things. It remains a shame that Samantha is not included in the Sex and the city reboot, as she would be as fun a character now as she was over 25 years ago.
Sex in the City follows Carrie Bradshaw, a New York writer who finds inspiration for her column in the genuine, emotional, and often humorous exploits of city life. Joined by best friends Miranda Hobbes, Charlotte York and Samantha Jones, Sex and the City follows the ups and downs of the characters’ romantic relationships, being single, sex and friendship as 30-something women.
