According to a real-life former double agent, Red Sparrow
Starring Jennifer Lawrence has a “Appropriate” Depiction of one espionage tactic. Released in 2018, Red Sparrow is directed by Francis Lawrence and based on a 2013 novel of the same name by author Jason Matthews. The Cold War spy thriller features Lawrence as Dominika Egorova, a former ballerina who joins an elite Soviet team of “Sparrows,” operators trained to use deception to achieve their espionage goals.
In a recent video for InsideFormer double agent Naveed Jamali analyzes a sequence in Red Sparrow In which Lawrence’s character is deeply undercover organizing criminal trade. According to Jamali, the film gets a lot right when it comes to espionage, including the challenges of seemingly simple tasks like assigning prices to illegal items as a spy. Dominka’s exchange of sensitive information is also considered “Believable,” although Jamali stressed just how high risk it would be. Check out his comments below, as well as his score for Red Sparrow of 10:
“A price of $250,000 is believable because … it’s important to understand that when it comes to an intelligence service, $250,000 is not a big deal for them. However, the question of what you charge is something that I struggled with Quite a bit. And I think in many cases, it’s not like you can go to indeed.com and see what the comps are. So you have to come up with your own framework of money.
“The idea of exchanging information, I suppose it’s plausible. Certainly, it would lead to the potential of the double agent being exposed. It’s absolutely realistic to look at Sparrow and to see someone sort of ad libbing it.
“That was certainly the case with me. There was one point where I met with Oleg and we showed him a database that had access to real time. And at that time he just pointed to a document and said ‘Can I Have that?’ And he’s like, ‘Well, I have a thumb drive, can you just put it on this?’ In a split second I had to make a decision. What would be my reason for saying no?
“So I’ll give this one an eight.” [out of 10]. This scene, I think, is appropriate in terms of Jennifer Lawrence and how she handles herself.

The fact that Red Sparrow Featuring some strong realism, then, is certainly a redeeming quality. The film was Lawrence’s first major film effort yet The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015), which Francis Lawrence also directed, and it was a noticeable turn to darker, more mature material after so many years playing Katniss Everdeen. Lawrence also, notably, hasn’t taken on another R-rated action thriller role since Red Sparrow.
Our take on the realism of Red Sparrow
Why the spy thriller remains a worthwhile watch
Although parts of Red Sparrow are worth celebrating, it is Lawrence’s performance that is the real standout element. With her work in the US Hunger Games franchise and beyond, Lawrence continues to prove just how versatile a performer she is, and Red Sparrow Showed audiences a significantly different version of the actor than they were used to seeing.
Although the 2016 spy thriller may not get a sequel, the film certainly suggests that Lawrence would excel if she ever took on another role in an R-rated action thriller. Red SparrowDespite its shortcomings, remains an appropriate watch, and it was an interesting shift for the actor’s career.
