The boys creator Eric Kripke explained what Homelander's god complex will look like “slowly driving him crazy“in Season 5, and how it will impact the story. The boys Season 4 ended with Homelander (Antony Starr) being appointed by House Speaker-turned-President Steven Calhoun (David Andrews) to a new task force led by Supe, with martial law declared across the US. This new position of power is the highest he's ever achieved, with the season finale's post-credits showing him deciding to awaken Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), hinting at what's to come in the final season.
Now, Variety reports that at an FYC panel hosted by SAG-AFTRA, Kripke explained how Homelander will still be dealing with his god complex in The boys season 5stemming from his trauma that has now consumed him. The series creator explained how the antagonist will fight and how “he wants to be a god but he is a man“becoming increasingly obsessed with human needs like safety and love, while at the same time wanting to abandon these ideals to become more powerful. Check out what Kripke had to say about his next development below:
He is literally all trauma. I think what he plays so well is that he wants to be a god, but he's a man. And it's kind of slow, or maybe not so slow, driving him crazy. So dealing with things like getting older, dealing with insecurity, dealing with the need for love – all very normal human things, are things that he finds detestable. He needs them, but he is revolted by them all at the same time.
What Kripke's Statement Means for Homelander In The Boys Season 5
He will still be fighting his own humanity
The boys Season 5 will see Homelander at his most powerful, with many Supes at his disposal and his plan for internment camps for political dissidents. The titular team won't be able to stand in their way either, as everyone except Starlight (Erin Moriarty) and a dying butcher (Karl Urban) have been captured by Vought. Season 4 made it seem like he had outgrown his humanity after visiting the laboratory where he was tormented with experiments as a child. However, Kripke's statement indicates that this fight will continue until the final season.
An obstacle to his attempts to circumvent his humanity may end up coming from Soldier Boy, who, in season three, belittled him and tried to kill him in the name of Butcher. Although Homelander wakes him up in hopes of making an ally, his past experiences don't guarantee everything will work out that way. In addition to the loss of Ryan (Cameron Crovetti), who disappeared after accidentally killing Mallory (Laila Robins), and his inability to stop aging, being belittled by his biological father could make him return to the struggles of humanity he struggled during season 4.
Our Take on Homelander's Ongoing God Complex in The Boys' Final Season
Your actions can bring the story to its peak
It's possible that as Homelander becomes more wrapped up in his god complex, he will end up taking drastic measures to prove that he has overcome his human nature. This could involve a series of catastrophes now that he is leading the charge for martial law in the US.and because of his powers being incomparable to almost every other Supe under his command. With The boys' Final season getting closer, it should be interesting to see how his humanity will develop and whether he can really put it aside for good.
The boys Season 5 is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video in 2026.
