From a certain point of view, Darth Maul played a decisive role in the destruction of the Empire. Maul (formerly Darth) led a tumultuous life. Devoting himself to the cause of Darth Sidious, he was “killed” by his archrival Obi-Wan Kenobi, clung to life on an abandoned planet, had his powers returned by the Nightsisters, found and subsequently lost his brother, became the evil ruler of Mandalore, and later led a crime syndicate “Crimson Dawn”
And yet, despite all these failures and achievements, he somehow found himself alone on the Sith planet Malachor, where Star Wars RebelsThe Ghost Crew found him in the two-part Season 2 finale, “Twilight of the Apprentice.” After everything he had been through, Maul was truly motivated by only one thing – the only thing that allowed him to control his anger enough to survive being cut in half by a lightsaber, and that fueled all his exploits after the fateful duel. with Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. All Maul ever really wanted was to overthrow Palpatine.
Darth Maul dreamed of overthrowing Palpatine and the Empire
Maul dreamed of defeating Palpatine and, as a result, the Empire. Not only was Darth Sidious turned him down twice – Palpatine replaced Maul with Dooku once Maul was killed, and later, after the two fought on Mandalore, Palpatine rejected Maul’s pleas for mercy after the Sith Lord killed the Zabrak’s brother – but Maul knew, perhaps better than anyone, that the galaxy would be worse off under Palpatine’s rule and that the Force must remain in balance. Of course, he was driven by revenge, but he also knew that someone, anyone, had to put an end to the power of the Sith and Palpatine.
Darth Maul changed Kanan’s life forever…
When Ezra Bridger, a relatively new Jedi Padawan, discovered Maul hidden on Malachor, it became clear that Maul had an ulterior motive. He did not tell Ezra who he really was, instead insisting that Ezra would be his ideal student. Luckily, Ezra’s Master, Kanan Jarrus, and Ahsoka Tano were also on Malachor, and they soon saw through Maul’s plans. A complex battle ensued – several Inquisitors arrived on the planet shortly after the Jedi arrived, and while Kanan fought Maul, Maul struck Kanan’s eyes with his lightsaber, blinding the Jedi forever.

Maul was on Malachor to learn more about the Sith and how to destroy them. However, he had no idea that by engaging Kanan Jarrus and depriving the Jedi of his sight, he would play an important role in the destruction of the Empire. and the eventual defeat of Emperor Palpatine. That moment changed everything for Kanan, Ezra, and the galaxy as a whole.
Without Kanan’s sacrifice, Grand Admiral Thrawn would not have been lost.
Although Kanan initially struggled with his lost vision, it ultimately brought him closer to the Force and his purpose as a Jedi than ever before. He learned to see through the Force, to communicate with it and his surroundings, relying not only on his lightsaber power, but also on his other senses. Maul gave Kanan the chance to become the Jedi he was always meant to be—selfless and fully in tune with the light side of the Force. He became an even better teacher for Ezra, especially after the young Jedi began to fight the dark side.

Everything Kanan had been through and his new relationship with the Force led to one major moment that changed the galaxy. IN Star Wars Rebels In Season 4, Episode 10, “Night of the Jedi,” Kanan selflessly sacrifices himself to save Ezra, his lover Hera Syndulla, and the Mandalorian Sabine Wren from the explosion of an Imperial fuel tank on the planet Lothal. He knew that this was exactly what he was meant to do. At that moment, he was so attuned to the Force, so confident in his purpose, that he even regained his sight for a moment, allowing him to look at his loved ones one last time.
Kanan’s sacrifice changed everything. This taught Ezra the most important lesson of all that Ezra had yet to learn: the art of letting go. Thanks to Kanan’s sacrifice, Ezra knew what he needed to do to defeat Grand Admiral Thrawn.one of the Empire’s most cunning tacticians, and free Lothal from the Empire’s clutches once and for all. IN Star Wars Rebels series finale, Ezra used his connection with the purrgils, Star wars space whales traversing hyperspace to banish themselves and Thrawn into the wild. Lothal was liberated and the Empire lost one of its most important leaders.
Thrawn’s disappearance marked the beginning of the end of the Empire – it was the Empire’s first major defeat, soon followed by the destruction of the Death Star.
It was confirmed that the Emperor Palpatine himself believed that only Grand Admiral Thrawn and Grand Moff Tarkin were cunning enough to dismember and defeat the Rebel Alliance.. Perhaps if Maul had not blinded Kanan on Malachor, Kanan would never have become the Jedi he was destined to be, he would never have sacrificed himself to save Ezra, and Ezra in turn would never have sacrificed his future to defeat Great Admiral Thrawn.
Thrawn’s disappearance marked the beginning of the end of the Empire – it was the Empire’s first major defeat, soon followed by the destruction of the Death Star. It is unknown what could have happened if Thrawn had remained in the galaxy. Darth Maul He may not have pulled the trigger himself, but he certainly had a hand in the final destruction of the Empire.
