Home creator reveals that he considered continuing with spinoffs. The original medical procedural show ran for eight seasons from 2004 to 2012. HomeThe sizable cast included Hugh Laurie (Dr. House), Robert Sean Leonard (Dr. Wilson), Omar Epps (Dr. Foreman), Lisa Edelstein (Dr. Cuddy), and more. It featured a wide variety of medical issues and mysteries, but the vast majority of the show revolved around the bitter nature of its titular protagonist. The show was a huge successearning over 19 million viewers at its peak and winning multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards.
When asking questions and answers with Weekly entertainment, The show’s creator, David Shore, explained that he and the other producers considered a spin-off after the Season 8 finale. They considered placing other characters in a leading rolewith the chance to stand out from Dr. House’s shadow. Although Shore would like to explore it, he ultimately turned down the idea. Check out his full quote below:
We talked about this at some point. Even after all this time, I hate to single out any of these characters because I liked them all and I don’t want anyone to feel condemned for not being named. But especially at the end, we could have done, like, Foreman was running the hospital, and Chase took over House’s department, and Cameron was away with family. They all live, and they could also I did a show with any of themand I would have liked it. But there is also a danger that a show will last too long. And then again, no complaints…
A spin-off is not likely to happen
Shore’s comments seem to indicate that he has little interest in bringing these characters back for a spin-off. He was worried about running shows for too long, even though he loved the characters enough to gladly see them revived. Even if it was approved, some characters would probably not reappearlike House and Wilson, since HomeThe tragic ending ensured that. Both characters drove off into the night, while Wilson chose to live out the next few months with a terminal illness. That ending is, unsurprisingly, the reason the show can’t be revived.
Home season 9 was a distinct possibilitybut the producers chose to let the show end at a natural point. With dwindling ratings, a feeling that the narrative was becoming stale, and an increasing number of actors leaving the show, they mutually agreed to let it end. In the following years, Home has achieved renewed success through streaming thanks to the divisive procedural’s unique and cynical take on medical care. This new success explains why the issue of a split is a possibility, but is still unlikely to happen.
Our take on a house spin-off
The show’s biggest attraction was Gregory House
The appeal of this show was the fact that Gregory House was its star. As interesting as the rest of the cast was, they worked well because they played with their cynical nature. Any show focusing on Cameron or Thirteen would simply seem like a typical procedural. That could be interesting, but it would never be a follow-up capable of Home or its legacy. Hugh Laurie was the perfect lead star, and the dynamic between Wilson and House is why it worked so well. Without him, there’s no reason to worry about a spinoff featuring other characters.
