Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock Show casts Mycroft Holmes

Set in the late teenage years of Sherlock Holmes while he was studying at Oxford University, the series sees Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective dragged into a murder case that will uncover a vast conspiracy. Ritchie’s return to the classic literary character will not be tied to his Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law-led movie duology, but will instead adapt the Young Sherlock Novel series written by Andrew Lane.

As filming continues, Term Reports that the series has cast a pivotal player for the series. Max Irons will take the role of Mycroft, the eldest son of the Holmes family. The actor will star alongside hero Fiennes Tiffin, who will play the young lead. Irons is best known for his role as Edward IV alongside DonRebecca Ferguson in the 2013 historical drama, The White Queen. in Young SherlockMycroft is expected to be a recurring role.

In the original Young Sherlock Holmes novels, Mycroft has yet to become the government figure who would bring cases and help his younger brother throughout his career. Zine Tseng will portray the Chinese princess Gulun Shou’an, while Colin Firth will take on the role of Sir Bucephalus Hodge.

Will Ritchie’s adaptation be faithful to the novels?

As previously stated, Sherlock was already enrolled at Oxford during the series, a move inspired by Mycroft much to Sherlock’s displeasure, which was established in the seventh book, Stone cold. With the novel centered on a body-snatching case rather than a murder, it is likely that the series could take the series premise and focus on an original story. Furthermore, with Amyus Crowe, a character original to the Young Sherlock series and not a creation of Doyle, yet to be cast, it is uncertain how faithful the show will be to its source material.

Having said that, Ritchie obviously has a strong track record when it comes to adapting the detective’s adventures, putting his own spin on the familiar stories and making them accessible to new audiences. It is likely that he will be able to achieve something similar with his Young Sherlock series, even if he does not stick so closely to the events of the novels. His choice of talented young actors to play the two Holmes brothers already suggests that the series is heading in the right direction, which is a good sign as in the early stages.
