Warning: SPOILERS ahead for the What We Do in the Shadows series finale! What we do in the shadows star Harvey Guillén addressed Guillermo's emotional ending and his potential future after the series finale. What we do in the shadows season 6 marked the end of the vampire comedy, the final episode seeing Guillermo (Guillén) highly emotional as the documentary about his and his friends' lives comes to an end. The family member even creates an ending from which he plans to leave, placing Nandor (Kayvan Novak) in his coffin. However, this ends up waking up the cameras, despite him being emotional about the ending.
Talking to TelaRantGuillén explained how What we do in the shadowsThe final scene was filmed on the last day of filmingincreasing actor Guillermo's emotions. He said the day was as difficult in real life for him as it was for his character, but that it was also “a happy moment” to close the book on the series. He also proposes a spinoff with Nandor fighting crime, saying how the adventure continues even after the cameras stop rolling. Check out what Guillén said below:
Was [an emotional catharsis]because it was the last day of filming the series that I have been working on for seven years, from pilot to end. It was the last scene of the show, so it was perfectly timed. That was all Paul Sims, who I later asked if that was on purpose, and he said, “Yes, that was on purpose.” I guess if you knew that, I don't know, maybe I'm just the most emotional person on set [laughs]or that he's human, it would make sense that Guillermo would be going through an emotional rollercoaster, because, remember, he's the only human. These vampires have been alive so long that these things don't intimidate them. They're like, “Yeah, it's just another chapter.” It's a blink of an eye for them, but for a human that, you know, time is ticking, we're not immortal, and every day you know is wasted not doing what you love, or wasted not achieving your goals and dreams just means that you have less time on this Earth to achieve it. All of this hit Guillermo at once, so it's a very sad moment. What is he if he isn't that familiar vampire, vampire bodyguard, vampire nightclub swindler, Van Helsing. [Chuckles] Like, who is he if he isn't all these things to someone else. I think it was a good lesson that we can all learn, that you have to be happy with yourself and not try to be an accessory or an accommodation for someone else, or for a bigger picture. You have to be happy with who you are, and I think Guillermo has had to learn that this season by entering the job market and seeing what he's made of, and I think he'll be fine. But it was very sad filming that scene. We start the series with Guillermo opening the door to the documentary team and welcoming them into his home. And we ended up with them literally walking away from him in the same hallway, and I was a wreck. And then, we broke up right after that, and I was kind of an emotional wreck. I was hugging Sarah Naftalis, who is one of our presenters and also one of our amazing writers. And it was like, “Wow, it's over. It's done.” And it was just a sad moment, but a happy moment, because we shared these memories forever, and now it's out there. You will live forever.
As we were filming this, we thought, “It seems like this is great, because it leaves it open for everyone to come back, but it seems like this could be a jumping point, an offshoot for Nandor and Guillermo. to fight crime together.” Like, imagine a world where someone is immortal, can fly, has superhuman strength, and then you have someone with Van Helsing blood running through him, who is very smart and fast and great in combat. It's a really good duo that could be a separate show. So, I think they go out and solve crimes together, and they're not the man in the tuxedo. [and Kid Cowboy]. [Laughs] But they go out together. And I feel like they have an adventure and they have each other. In the end, they ended each other, which was what everyone wanted from the fans, they ended each other. So I like that, they belong together, it's cool.
What Guillén's statement says about Guillermo's future after What We Do in the Shadows
His story isn't over, even if the series ends
After putting Nandor on camera, Guillermo returns to him, where he is invited into his coffin. It turns out that the vampire somehow created an elevator shaft to a secret underground lair, recruiting his family member to fight crime with him as The Cowboy Kid (The vampire chose the nickname “The Phantom Menace”). The silly final moment may not be as heartfelt as the fake goodbye, but it still offers a bit of sweetness amidst the laughs, knowing What we do in the shadowsThe characters' lives will continue as normal even after the cameras stop rolling.
By having a mix of emotion and comedy in its final episode, the series reflects everything it has captured on screen since its beginning in 2019. It's also smart to have Guillermo, the only human in the main group, be the one who goes through the most emotionssince a significant part of his life was dedicated to documentaries. While What we do in the shadows The reviews show that the series made a good decision by ending it before it could decline in quality, the presentation still leaves the door open, showing how life goes on for its engaging characters.
Our take on Guillermo's future after what we do in the shadows
It looks like he will fight crime alongside Nandor
Although Guillermo is clearly thrilled that the documentary is finally coming to an end, his life with vampires is far from over, especially now that Nandor wants to fight crime. The duo's hilarious new path appears to be the next stage of their journey together, however long the idea lasts. Although it is not clear whether What we do in the shadows in fact, it would look for a spin-off of the crime-fighting duo, leaving the door open to show how the end of the audience's time with them doesn't mean the story is over for good.
