Grey's Anatomy Season 21 Bringing Back 1 Forgotten Doctor Could Give an Unfair Plot a Fitting End

Grey's Anatomy Season 21 is the perfect opportunity to bring back one of the series' best, but most forgotten, doctors. Grey's Anatomy introduced Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson) in season 12 as a love interest for Meredith shortly after Derrick's death. During their short time on the show, Riggs and Meredith had a rather pleasant relationship with each other. However, when Riggs' fiancee, Megan Hunt, was found alive after being reported missing in Iraq years ago, he left Meredith and moved to California to restart his life with Megan.

While Riggs' departure wasn't exactly one of the worst Grey's Anatomy character's departure, created an unfair plot. Her appearance on the medical drama even introduced a tense conflict with Megan's brother, Owen Hunt, who has always blamed Riggs for Megan's disappearance. His relationship with Meredith never got the ending it deservednor his conflict with Owen. Happily, Grey's AnatomyMartin Henderson revealed that "would always be open to the possibility"to reappear in Grey's Anatomy season 21 and giving his character some proper closure.

Riggs' Grey's Anatomy exit ends up being heartbreaking

Riggs' happiness in California was short-lived

Riggs and Meredith have had a fairly pleasant relationship throughout Riggs' time on the show, with the potential to form a committed, long-term relationship as well. Because both characters experienced serious losses in their lives, they were able to bond and connect on a deeper level. However, Grey's Anatomy season 14 reintroduced Megan into Riggs' life. Although Riggs truly enjoyed his time with Meredith, he chose to break up with her and return to Megan now that he knew she was safe.

Unfortunately, when Megan returned to Gray Sloan years later, she revealed that she and Riggs broke up during the pandemic. While stuck at home, they realized their relationship was no longer working and decided it would be best to separate. Grey's AnatomyNathan Riggs and Megan's breakup is all the more heartbreaking because it means Riggs and Meredith's relationship never reached its full potential.

It's almost unbelievable that Riggs and Megan split after so long apart in the context of Megan's harsh circumstances.

How Riggs helped Meredith heal from her heartbreak over Derrick the Grey's Anatomy couple really bonded. They had the potential to stay together for years in a serious relationship in Seattle. If Riggs had never moved to California to be with Megan, maybe he and Meredith would have ended up together for life. It's clear that both characters are interested in long-term relationships, and if it weren't for the breakup, they might have been right for each other.

Riggs' return in Grey's Anatomy season 21 could explain what went wrong between him and Megan

Riggs can finally reveal his side of the story

Not much is known about their split other than what Megan revealed in Grey's Anatomy season 18. The pandemic can be particularly difficult for couples who are spending more time together than ever before, so it seems like a valid reason why a COVID-19 lockdown has pushed them toward separation. However, Megan had been missing and presumed dead for 10 years. Was almost unbelievable that Riggs and Megan would break up after being apart for so long in the context of Megan's harsh circumstances.

After gathering, Megan and Riggs were only together four years before splitting some time before Grey's Anatomy season 18. Since they spent 10 years apart and Megan certainly gained incredibly harsh life experiences before returning home, both characters could have changed a lot to go back to the way things were before. Riggs' return in Grey's Anatomy season 21 could answer these questions and reveal the real reason they split after years apart.

How Riggs' Return Could Impact Landscape Changes at Gray-Sloan

Riggs could bring some tension to Gray Sloan

Riggs could return to Gray Sloan in his profession as a cardiothoracic surgeon. The return would reunite him with old colleagues including Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman, who also worked with him in Iraq when Megan went missing. While Owen and Riggs never got along after Megan's disappearancehis return could potentially force a reunion of good relations between the two old friends. Now that Megan is safe and she and Riggs have amicably separated, Riggs' return in Grey's Anatomy season 21 opens up the potential for an amicable reconciliation between him, Owen and Teddy as well.

As Meredith and Nick appear to be endgame, Riggs could rekindle old feelings like those that eluded her.

In addition to Riggs' difficult relationship with Owen, his return could cause problems for Meredith's relationship with Nick Marsh. As Meredith and Nick appear to be endgame, Riggs could rekindle old feelings like those that eluded her. Riggs returning to Grey's Anatomy it would be great for plot development, but it could cause some conflict between your old friends as old memories come flooding back.
