The Green Lantern Corps went through massive changes when the organization’s leadership passed to the United Planet. Disagreeing with the changes Lord Premier Thaaros made, John chose to retire from active duty and returned home to take care of his sick mother. With Shirley struggling with dementia, John made his mother a construct of his sister to keep his mother safe and provide company. This was a smart move on John’s part as his mother was eventually targeted by the Star Shroud, The shape-shifting remnants of a Green Lantern that was corrupted by the Radiant Dead.

Fans only got to see Shirley Stewart in her twilight years, but even John Stewart admits that she deserves to be a Green Lantern over him. In her youth, Shirley was an active fighter for civil rights who faced challenge after challenge on top of raising John and Ellie. While Eli can’t officially induct Shirley into the Green Lantern Corps, it’s the next best thing. The Eli build is only a fragment of John’s power, but with his connection to the source, The fusion of Ali and Shirley makes John’s mother one of the strongest Green Lanterns around.

Will the Mother of Green Lantern beat the Star Shroud?

The Star Shroud is a force unto itself and seemingly more powerful than any member of the Radiant Dead. However, John’s power was enough to beat Varron once, so there is little doubt that Eli has the power to defeat what is left of Varron. Plus, in her more lucid moments, Shirley has all the wisdom and grit that John Stewart is known for. It will be difficult because the Star Shroud is a phenomenon that even more seasoned superheroes have struggled against. But Green Lantern Mother may have everything she needs to beat her enemy.
