The Lord of the Rings
gets a Christmas twist in a new music video, which shows Gollum trying to secure his Precious during the holiday season. Based on the books by JRR Tolkien, Peter Jackson first brought the world of Middle-earth to life in 2001, with his trilogy concluding in 2003. Gollum plays a major role in the second and third films, leading Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) through Mordor to Mount Doom, although he eventually gives in to his desire for the One Ring.
Brendan Dalton now puts Gollum front and center in a new Lord of the Rings music video called “Gollum's Christmas”. The video, presented in clay, shows Gollum enjoying a Merry Christmas with the One Ring, often appearing alongside Frodo and Sam in a version of Middle-earth decked out for the holidays. Just because it's Christmas doesn't mean Gollum is being any less naughty. Check out the music video below:
What Gollum's Christmas means for Lord of the Rings
Gollum will continue to play an important role in the future of the franchise
Gollum remains one of the most memorable and important Lord of the Rings characters, but, despite the grandeur of the video clip above, he probably won't have a Christmas adventure in Middle Earth anytime soon. Gollum, however, is expected to play an important role in the future of the franchise. The character, played by Andy Serkis, will be highlighted in the next The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum film.
In addition to reprising his role as Gollum, Serkis will also direct The Hunt for Gollumwhich presents Lord of the Rings franchise pastors Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens on board as producers. The story introduces Gollum back during the events of The Fellowship of the Ringchronicling Aragorn and Gandalf's attempts to capture the creature before he can bring the news of Frodo and the Ring to Sauron.
Our opinion on Gollum's Christmas
Now is the perfect time to revisit Lord of the Rings
Jackson The Lord of the Rings the trilogy remains the gold standard for fantasy adaptations, and all three films have received critical acclaim as well as being box office hits. Although the most divisive The Hobbit the trilogy may not have reached the same heights, Jackson's original vision of Middle-earth went on to define the franchise. More than 20 years since The Fellowship of the Ring was released, the franchise certainly brings a level of comfort and familiarity, which makes it a great option to revisit on vacation.
An official Gollum Christmas movie is unlikely to happen – Christmas doesn't exist in Middle-earth anyway — but the video clip above makes a compelling case for rewatching Jackson's iconic trilogy. If Gollum starred in his own Lord of the Rings holiday movie with musical numbers, he would certainly sing about wanting the One Ring for Christmas.
