Game of Thrones: how Olenna killed Joffrey

Despite being one of the most iconic and crowd-pleasing deaths Game of ThronesThere are still questions among fans about who killed Joffrey. Joffrey Baratheon was poisoned in Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 2, “The Lion and the Rose,” and it’s safe to say it was a moment that had many (if not all) fans of the show cheering. However, although Tyrion Lannister was quickly arrested and accused of being a murderer, the real killers managed to keep their identities hidden.

In the episode following Joffrey’s death, it is revealed that Littlefinger had something to do with Joffrey’s murder and was working with some powerful allies. Although Olenna Tyrell also subtly confirms her involvement in the murder in Season 4, she doesn’t confess to the crime until her death in Season 7 in an epic final moment. However, while audiences were simply happy to see Joffrey go because he was a nasty sadist, the matriarch of House Tyrell had her own complex reasons for wanting him removed from the Iron Throne.

Who was behind Joffrey’s death

Olenna Tyrell and Littlefinger worked together to remove Joffrey from the throne

Despite allowing Tyrion to take the blame for the murder,, it was eventually revealed that Olenna Tyrell worked with Littlefinger to poison the young tyrant. Of Game of Thrones From Seasons 4 to 7, Cersei believed that Tyrion was behind her eldest son’s murder. Joffrey’s tyrannical reign came to an end in season 4, episode 2, “The Lion and the Rose,” better known as the “Purple Wedding,” as the event takes place after the wedding ceremony of Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell (granddaughter of Olenna ).

Tyrion was framed for his nephew’s murder because he was the one who inadvertently delivered the wine that fatally poisoned Joffrey. Dying in his mother’s lap, the horrible child points his finger accusingly at his uncle before succumbing to asphyxiation. Cersei latched onto this accusation because she, like Joffrey, had an irrational hatred for Tyrion and saw him as a stain on the Lannister name.

However, as later revealed by Olenna Tyrell, she and Littlefinger were actually responsible. Littlefinger smuggled poison into King’s Landing via a hairnet he gave as a gift to Sansa Stark. Olenna then used the net to add the poison to Joffrey’s wine.. However, as Tyrion was forced to take on the humiliating position of Joffrey’s cupbearer, it was easy for the kingdom to believe he was responsible (and given Joffrey’s treatment of Tyrion, he would certainly have had a motive). In fact, it was Olenna who poisoned the wine.

Littlefinger worked with Dontos Hollard to deliver the poison, which was hidden in a stone attached to a necklace given to Tyrion’s wife by Olenna. During the party, the Tyrell matriarch sneakily took the poisoned stone from Sansa’s necklace and placed it in Joffrey’s wine glass while he mocked his uncle, cutting his wedding cake with a sword and just acting like a pompous fool in general. The Kingchild drank the toxic alcohol and died – painfully.

When Lady Olenna revealed her role in Joffrey’s death

His last words ensured that the Lannisters knew that the Tyrells were a powerful enemy

Game of Thrones Season 7, Episode 3, “The Queen’s Justice,” ended with a big reveal for Jaime Lannister: the whole truth about Joffrey’s death. Jaime led his troops to Highgarden to dispatch the Tyrell threat, and it was during these final scenes that viewers were reminded of who killed his and Cersei’s eldest son – the one and only Lady Olenna.

The inimitable head of House Tyrell had been working with Daenerys Targaryen to overthrow the Lannisters since the beginning. However, she only wanted to reveal this to Jaime after Cersei murdered her entire family at the end of Season 6, to ensure the Lannisters knew that House Tyrell hadn’t gone away quietly.

Before Cersei’s actions, there was every chance that House Tyrell had found their way to the Iron Throne, but after they were all but wiped out, Lady Olenna knew that the only thing she had left was her pride – and the chance to inflict one. final moment of emotional pain for the Lannisters. She tells Jaime the truth about her son’s death, in a brutal way, after drinking the fatal poison that was supposed to cause his death. No doubt Jaime regretted the kindness he offered Lady Olenna after hearing her last words to him:

I would hate to die like your son. Scratching my neck, foam and bile dripping from my mouth, eyes blood red, skin purple. It must have been horrible for you, as a member of the Kingsguard, as a father. It was horrible enough for me, a shocking scene, not at all what I intended. See, I’ve never seen poison work before. Tell Cersei. I want her to know it was me.

Why Lady Olenna Helped Kill Joffrey

Olenna didn’t trust Joffrey with Margaery

While it may seem obvious to viewers why Olenna murdered Joffrey – he was a totally despicable character, after all – there were actually several subtle reasons behind the poisoning besides Joffrey being simply horrible. There’s also the fact that the Lannisters had just made Margaery Tyrell, Olenna’s granddaughter, Queen, meaning Olenna’s house was closer to the Iron Throne than ever before.

The Tyrells were in a very good political position at the time, thanks to this royal wedding and Cersei’s marriage to Loras. However, Joffrey’s cruel reputation preceded him too much and Lady Olenna did not want Margaery to become a victim of his evil and malicious whims. She explains two episodes after the Purple Wedding as she tries to get Margaery to seduce her late husband’s brother Tommen:

Olenna: The Queen Regent is quite distracted at the moment, mourning the passing of her beloved son and accusing her brother of murder, which he did not commit.

Margaery: Well, he could have done that.

Olenna: He could have done that, but he didn’t.

Margaery: You don’t know, Grandma.

Olenna: Oh, but I know. You don’t think I would let you marry that beast, do you?

Thanks to Olenna, Joffrey’s death immediately led to some devastating consequences. Tyrion was arrested and accused of his nephew’s murder, as was Sansa Stark, but she had already fled King’s Landing with Littlefinger. Tyrion then called for a trial by combat after realizing that his true judgment would be corrupted by Cersei’s vengeful influence, leading Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne to volunteer as his champion just so he could exact revenge on Cersei’s champion, Ser Gregor Clegane. (who had raped and murdered his sister Elia), but his arrogance only resulted in his own death.

Despite the loss, Jaime helped Tyrion escape, but before leaving for the Free Cities, he murdered his own father, Tywin, and his treacherous lover, Shae. There were many deaths in Game of Thrones This had far-reaching consequences, but Lady Olenna’s poisoning of Joffrey is definitely one that reshaped the political landscape of the Seven Kingdoms more than any other.

Joffrey’s death was further proof of Littlefinger’s power

Littlefinger was an unseen puppet master throughout the series

While Olenna’s confession about Joffrey’s death cements her as the true killer in fans’ minds, Littlefinger’s role in the murder shouldn’t be forgotten as it speaks to the character’s deadly ambitions. House Tyrell was a wealthy Westerosi family that served as a genuine rival to House Lannister. They themselves had considerable power, so it was not surprising that they would make a move towards the Iron Throne when it benefited them. However, Littlefinger’s boldness in going after House Lannister is surprising.

Littlefinger’s biggest power plays:

Killing Jon Arryn

Season 1

Selling Ned Stark to the Starks

Season 1

Arranging the alliance of House Lannister and House Tyrell

Season 2

Killing Joffrey

Season 4

Killing Lysa Arryn

Season 4

Arranging Sansa’s wedding to Ramsay Bolton

Season 5

Littlefinger is a figure in Westeros who had to build power on his own rather than inherit it as a member of a large family.. While it would make sense that he would try to ingratiate himself with whatever powerful house had him in their inner circle, Littlefigner is always making moves to improve his position by any means necessary.

Despite not having an army or strong support from other houses, Littlefinger did more than any other character to influence the events of the series. It is revealed after Joffrey’s death that he was also responsible for Jon Arryn’s death and used this to start the rivalry between House Stark and House Lannister, seemingly starting the War of the Five Kings. Just as with Joffrey’s death, Littlefinger uses the ensuing chaos to gain a better position and cement himself as one of the most powerful characters in the game. Game of Thrones.
