Game Of Thrones Creator GRRM Reveals Scrapped Braavos HBO Spin-Off And Teases Future Plans

Game of Thrones
author George RR Martin reveals that a Braavos spinoff has been scrapped and he may eventually return to the idea. First aired on HBO in 2011, Game of Thrones it would become one of the channel’s most-watched programs of all time. After a divisive conclusion in 2019, the world of Westeros returned with Dragon House in 2022, and another spinoff called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Knight Errant It is confirmed that it is on the way. A variety of other spinoffs, however, are in development or have been canceled.

In a new post on his Not A Blog called “The Canals of Braavos”, Martin reveals that a Bravos Game of Thrones the spinoff was already in development, but HBO shelved the idea several years ago. After discussing his inspirations for the city of Braavos, which includes Venice, Italy, and Amstedam, Netherlands, Martin teases that he could actually return to this written spinoff in the future. Check out an excerpt from his blog below:

One of these days I need to write that Braavos story we were developing for HBO. Unfortunately, they shelved it a few years ago, but that doesn’t mean I won’t come back to it…after WINDS OF WINTER ends, of course.

What the cancellation of the Braavos spinoff means for the Game Of Thrones universe

What spinoffs are still in development?

However Game of Thrones season 8 was controversial, the show was still a hugely successful venture. A variety of spinoff shows were confirmed in the months and years after the mothership program’s conclusion, but some seemingly fell by the wayside. The announced Jon Snow spin-off has been shelved, as have the shows built around Flea Bottom, the Seven Gods and the fall of Valyria.

Several others remain in development, but that doesn’t mean they won’t also be canceled. After all, “in development” doesn’t mean a project has been given the green lightand it’s a phrase that signals that a showrunner and writers are trying to create a compelling enough story for a show. Game of Thrones spinoffs that remain in development or have unknown status include 10,000 ships, Aegon’s Conquest, The Sea Serpent/ Nine Journeysand The Golden Empire.

Our take on the canceled Braavos spinoff Game Of Thrones

Westeros will continue to expand

Even if not all of the above spinoffs are realized, the world of Westeros will still be a prominent fixture on the entertainment landscape for years to come as Dragon House 3rd season and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms both get closer. The Braavos spinoff won’t be among the franchise’s upcoming shows, but Martin’s tease that he may not be done with the idea suggests that readers could be in for an exciting new adventure in the future.

Fortunately, however, Martin’s blog suggests that this Braavos story will not take precedence over Winter windsthat readers have been waiting for for several years. It’s unclear whether this spinoff would take the form of a Fire and Bloodtype of historical text or more like a narrative story, but Martin is evidently interested in further expanding his Game of Thrones universe in the coming years.
