One of the most compelling pieces of evidence suggesting Momiji’s true feelings for Tohru is the quote he uttered after the Zodiac Curse was finally broken, freeing the Sohmas. In this moment of joy, he proclaimed: “My curse has broken, but I still can’t be with the person I love most.” Although he has not explicitly stated her name, Tohru is the person he has spent the most time with, been most affectionate with, and trusted the most. She appears to be the person he was referring to, and the quote makes even more sense considering Kyo and Tohru’s relationship.

On Sohma’s joyous beach trip in season two, Momiji also made another comment that suggests he has a crush on Tohru, telling Kyo, “I’m selfish for loving Tohru so much.” Also on the beach vacation, he commented to a few others that he was excited to go home and see Tohru again when they went for a walk without her. All of the Sohmas grew to love Tohru because of her generous nature, her fun-loving spirit, and her genuine care for everyone around her, but Momiji fell the hardest. The way Momiji handled his romantic feelings for Tohru shows that he is an excellent person. Momiji noticed Kyo and Tohru’s love, and instead of punishing himself or trying to sabotage it, he selflessly chose not to potentially ruin their relationship by rooting for them despite his personal desires. Momiji even encouraged Kyo to make things work with Tohru. He asked Kyo to be honest about his feelings and emotionally open to a relationship with Tohru, as he understood how much Tohru loved Kyo at that point and wanted his best friend to be happy, even if it was with someone else.

Momiji is a generous friend to both Tohru and Kyo, and both before their relationship began and after they got together, he has been nothing but supportive. Because of Momiji’s selflessness, his dynamic with Tohru and Kyo offered a different take on the traditional love triangle. After Momiji realized the extent of Tohru and Kyo’s love, he chose not to fight for Tohru’s affection in anything other than a platonic sense. He kept silent about his own feelings because he knew his confession would hurt Kyo and Tohru. Momiji’s willingness to put aside her passion for Tohru’s happiness proves her care for her.

Fruit Basket Forever showed that Momiji ultimately led a happy life: he married someone else, had a daughter, and restored his relationship with his sister, Momo, after being removed from her by their mother. The love triangle between Momiji, Kyo, and Tohru is technically unresolved, as he never openly confessed to Tohru or anyone else, but Hiding your crush was the right choice for everyoneas his selfless decision allowed everyone to find true happiness and romantic fulfillment in the end, including himself.
