Zeke Will Have to Grow Up in ‘Found’ Season 2

“We’re going to have a good time unpacking this, peeling back those layers and seeing what’s behind the next version of Zeke.”

Screen Rant: I’m still reeling from the Season 1 finale. What did you think when you found out what the cliffhanger would be?

Arlen Escarpeta: When I read that script, I just shook my head and thought, “Wait, what now? What does it mean?” And literally all the questions that, as it seems to me, arose from your regular audience, I had the same ones. What does this mean for the team? Where is he? There were so many questions and then I just laughed to myself.

I said, “Well, we’re going to have a good time getting all these questions answered in season two.” This is a special show. They find a really good balance in that we’re obviously doing some amazing things, bringing families together and bringing people home, but then you get these really amazing storylines that are so intriguing from a creative standpoint. We are simply in love with this show.

Me too. It really stands out from other treatments.

Arlen Escarpeta: I think NK, NBC and Berlanti Productions are all really doing their best. It brings creative satisfaction. Obviously, this is educational in the sense that these things actually happened. You really learn about what happens when you’re just in your bubble.

In a good way, I think it kind of slows you down enough that you’re clearly enjoying the show, but you might think once or twice about going back. Did you see anything? Should I say anything to you? Should you make this call? And you never know how you can make an impact and really help someone in any way, shape or form. I think we did something good.

How does the truth about Sir affect Zeke’s perception of Gabi throughout Season 2?

Arlen Escarpeta: Things are changing everywhere. Gabi is not perfect. Even before you get to agoraphobia, I think Zeke romanticizes a lot of things, whether it’s the relationships he has in his life or the people that surround him. He lives in a space where he creates a very safe space for himself and it has to look a certain way and people act a certain way, especially Mosely & Associates, this foster home for him, was a boundary against the outside world. They were safe and amazing and beautiful, and now he understands that Gabi is not perfect, Gabi is imperfect, Gabi is human.

I think this will test Zeke not only in how he sees her, but also in how he sees himself. We’re going to have a good time unpacking this, unraveling these layers and seeing what’s behind the next version of Zeke, because he’s going to have to grow up. These are the growing pains he’s going through. And it’s interesting because even though Zeke is agoraphobic and can’t go outside, it still affects him. It will be interesting to see how he lives within his walls, in his house, how he understands all this, not being able to go outside, and so on.

‘Found’ Season 2 Reveals Pieces of Zeke’s Sinister Backstory

“If anyone knows, I’ll have to imagine Gabi knows.”

Arlen Escarpeta as Zeke, looking forward in the second season of Found.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about Zika. Will we delve deeper into his past and backstory in season two?

Arlen Escarpeta: I think you got it in pieces. However, here’s the thing. Zeke, no matter how open you see him, is very much wearing a mask. His mask is his clothes, these are his sweaters, these are his hair, these are his computers, these are all these things. For him, it’s still a mask that allows him to be part of the team without necessarily having to deal with some internal trauma. And I think on our team we all do that.

We compartmentalize our own trauma to do good work that helps others because it feels good, but there is a part of us that still neglects the work we need to do on ourselves. Here we are in Season 2, and Zeke is going to have to really figure out how to find that balance and make it clear to him, and only him.

In the finale he opened up a little. Zeke tells the team that his uncle kidnapped him. Will it expand?

Arlen Escarpeta: When we go deeper into Zeke’s kidnapping and what he’s told us so far while he’s being guarded, Zeke is still keeping so much a secret. If anyone knows, I’d guess Gabi knows. They met each other through online therapy, which we learned about in the pilot episode, so I thought there was something that could be said there that I don’t think anyone else did.

Maybe Lacey, maybe Dhan, but I think Zeke still really wants people to look at him the way they looked at him. Once these truths are revealed and exposed, Zeke may not want the rest of the team to look at him that way. I’m not sure what he’s protecting us from yet, but I think once we peel back those layers, it’s bound to touch our hearts because I think that’s what Zeke does. It really opens your heart and makes you feel something.

Zeke and Lacey are close. How will her kidnapping affect him?

Arlen Escarpeta: I think Lacy’s kidnapping affected Zeke in both good and bad ways. In a good way, Zeke must be brave. He must be brave. He must find a way to be part of the solution, despite the truths and lies Gabi has been hiding all this time. We’ll have to find out because Lacey is now missing. She’s with sir. The bad news is that since Lacey isn’t around, Zeke now has to see if he’s strong enough to stand on his own.

He can’t necessarily talk to Dan or Mark or Gabi for that matter because we’re all separated right now. We are all in different places and times, and the way we usually communicate with each other is not consistent with where we are now. We are a very broken family, no one answers the phone, we are in separate rooms and the doors are closed. We’re not going to do the same powwows that we did before. It will be interesting to see how we solve problems as a team and as a family.

Escarpeta believes not knowing Zeke’s full story will benefit his performance

“The unknown is as creatively interesting as factual knowledge.”

Kelly Williams as Margaret, Arlen Escarpeta as Zeke, Karan Oberoi as Dan in the second season of Found.

Is there a storyline you’d like to see for Zeke that the show hasn’t had the chance to do yet?

Arlen Escarpeta: Oh, that’s so interesting. I didn’t introduce anything as such, but I asked questions, just things I don’t know, and they said, “Do you want to know?” and my response: “You know what? Not yet. I don’t want to know yet,” because the unknown is just as creatively interesting as actual knowledge. And so for me, as an actor, not knowing too much is definitely an advantage. Knowing enough is what I need so I don’t end up playing too early.

And at least at this moment I’m really enjoying the unknown. I play with the fact that Zeke holds his vest so close. When I’m filming my scenes, there are moments when I look through the monitors and see them hugging, I see families reunited. I see the team working together to achieve a goal. They run out the door and all this happens.

And I have these quiet moments with Zeke where I’m alone and I’m really just thinking and creating scenarios of what Zeke is holding on to, why he can’t leave the house, what he’d like to do if he could get away. house. How badly he wants to be on the other side. Right now I have a great balance of both of those worlds, but I’m definitely looking forward to the truths and realities that it will bring to me that I can play in hopefully in Season 2, as well as Seasons 3, 4, 5, 6 and for many years to come.

Like you said, the team is fractured this season, but was there a Zeke dynamic in Season 1 that you really liked?

Arlen Escarpeta: I love the Zeke and Dan storyline. I love that they started out as opposites, but they connected on such an honest, friendly level that they now understand each other where they initially butted heads. I also love Zeke and Lacey’s growing relationship as they try to figure out what’s going on there. “Are we friends? Are we more than friends? I just like it when you’re around. Are you listening to me? It’s different when you’re talking to one person and not another. And so I think Zeke may have a different type of relationship with all the mergers and acquisitions.

He gets a tremendous amount of strength and courage from Gabi because that’s what she represents. I think what he gets from Dhan is, “Wow, someone has been where I’ve been and come out of it. Look where he is now. This is hope.” And then when Zeke talks to Lacey, Lacey says, “In your head, you’re still a kid, and your emotions are the same as mine, so I can relate to you on that level.” And then when Zeke talks to Margaret, there is a trauma that is actually still actively happening: a woman who has been going to the bus stop every night for countless years, searching faces and eyes, looking for her son, but she has become what -so powerful that she now helps other people.

All of these different relationships that Zeke has have serve him in different ways. I think in the best sense of the word, these are his feelings. Obviously there’s the computer and the drones and all that stuff, but that relationship and how he connects with it is through eyes and ears and sound and touch. Zeke gains exposure to the outside world through all the mergers and acquisitions. And I think that’s what’s most special about Zeke at Mosely & Associates. That’s what they represent to him. They are he outside.
